Hi Debbie and family
I just discovered Dave’s obituary . I met Dave in the summer of 1977… he was a lifeguard and I was a server in Nags Head! I am so sorry for your loss. He was such a sweet guy !  Lost track of him after we both went back to school; I was at ECU! I remember him playing guitar and sitting on his lifeguard stand! Sounds like he had a great life! Gone too soon🙏🏻

"Heyyy Ellyyy".......this is how I was always greeted by Dave in his open, expansive way, accompanied by his little chuckle.  Dave had a wonderful way of being kind and inclusive of all of his friends and acquaintances.  Simply put, he was a fun guy to hang out with.  It was no harm that he was good looking and was always able to churn out some mellow vocals accompanied with a few strums on the guitar!  Dave's charming personality and passion for life were contaigous, and his honesty and integrity were plain to see and never faltered.

In our negotionations over the beach house, I saw the business side of Dave.  He could be exacting, unafraid and determined.  In these moments, he commanded respect and attention, and it was a time I learned how he had achieved all that he had done professionally in his life.  In one of these "less patient" moods, I was seated beside him at a wedding where he made me promise that I would set a time limit to the speeches at any wedding that I was throwing, because, frankly, he was irritated with all the rambling!  If I did not agree then and there to speeches less than 3 minutes apiece, he was "not going to come"!

What I know for certain is that I miss having him around and I always will.  It is the last day of 2012 as I write this, and I am looking at a magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean from the table of our shared beach house.  He is a part of this venture and it is impossible to be here and not think of him. Since it is the end of the year, there is a chance for me to "make a promise," and so, I promise to Dave that I will curtail all wedding speeches that I can influence to 3 minutes and that I will no longer think of him with sadness as we move into the New Year, but with a great gladness for knowing him all the years that I did.

Finally, I send this anonymous quote to Debbie, Carrie and Jenn, the ladies in his life who I know he adored more than anything:

"What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived.  And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget."

Dear Debbie and family,

I don't have one special memory of Dave, but will certainly not forget him. So what is it that makes him memorable an made him a very pleasant person to work with? 
I guess it was early this century when I started working with Stock America. From the start Dave was my primary contact and I have developed a great trust in him as a person, and because of that in Stock as a company. Dave was always very patient and understanding with us, although it must sometimes have been difficult for him to work with us Europeans. He was never impatient or upset when we confronted him with high prices or long lead times and he understood the difficulties we sometimes had in serving our American customers. 
Dave was always looking for win-win solutions and was great at putting things in the right perspective. He always stayed calm and never lost his smile. I enjoyed travelling with Dave because he was pleasant company and just like me would always enjoy a nice meal. I remember several occasions when we went to a nice restaurant for lunch or dinner, sometimes with a large international group when we were at an exhibition. Dave liked to talk about his family and about sports and we shared our experiences in coaching our daughter's teams.
Because of the trust I had in Dave we started to work on a joint-venture to improve the service to our customers in the USA and reduce lead times and cost. We are now close to establishing this joint-venture. The joint-venture will certainly be one of the things which will keep the memory of Dave alive for me. He was a great guy to work with.

"My Brother from another Mother."  Dave had said that to me many, many times.  I loved him like a brother as he was my best friend here in Cary.  I couldn't tell you when the first time was that Dave and I met, but I do know that when a social event was happening I would always ask if Dave was going to be there.  We played golf, tennis, cards, ate many a lunches, conducted business, and would meet for that rare (maybe not so rare) beer after (golf, tennis, work, whatever).  

We used to play tennis on the week nights and started a tradition of going to Rudinos (when it was still up the street) and we kept corrupting more and more athletes to join us after our grueling workouts.  I would get the latest update on soccer with the girls, mood of the wife, and status of work.  I of course would exchange the same.  We played many a game in social or league but even though Dave is widely known for his competitiveness in sport, when we played together it always was dominated with laughter.  Dave would turn to me to discuss a strategy on the court, then just say, "You're just going to hit it where ever aren't you?", because he knew I had little control.  We did have fun though.

We played a lot of golf together.  We played in league and one season we were teamed as partners.  Our strategy then was to determine who would bring the cigars and ice down a few beers on the cart.  Up until then we always walked in league.  

I remember one time a friend of mine had his best friend in from Florida visiting and they were playing golf and invited me.  I asked Dave to join us.  We played at Tobacco Road.  I was playing the best game of my life.  We got on this par 3 hole and my friend hits first to within about 3 feet from the cup.  I go next and get inside of that to about 2 feet.  The next guy rolls to about a foot to the hole.  Dave then shoots, the ball hits the pin and just misses going in the cup landing less than 6 inches from the cup.  It was during this same round that Dave told me something that really made me think.  He said that if something happened to him now that ended his life he was OK with that.  He felt he had truly lived a good life and that his girls were going to do great.  He was at peace with everything.

What I remember most when we played golf was the word "Smooooooth", that was our way of describing our shot when we hit it well.  One of the funniest times was at a Campbell Soup tournament one year.  Dave was not a cigar lover but enjoyed the occasional smoke.  He found these miniature cigars that were barely bigger than a cigarette.  He thought they were really cool and lasted about as long as he wanted to smoke while playing.  Well, the guys at Campbell started razzing him about these silly little cigars and it started to take a life of its own.  So instead of joining in the razzing I went and lit up a cigar and said how great these little things were.  Soon everyone was lighting up.  Dave was about fun and enjoying life.

We went to many a party through the years and we always hung together for a laugh.  However there was one party that stands out from all the rest.  The Flaherty's Irish Party.  Both Dave and I were in a rare mood.  We talked about everything that night and drinking beer.  Then Dave brought over a couple of green jello cups.  Since it was St. Patricks day we felt obliged to have one or six.  Roy Siggens had the band playing which was later named Green Night, and then Jamison joined the party.  Even Liz Radman participated in those.  Well, the next day Dave and I had a tennis match.  Dave made it, I called in for a sub since I came down with the Irish flu that prevented me being at 100%.

I think what I liked most were our many lunches and after work beers.  One time after work I texted him that it was beer thirty, meaning it was probably 4:30 and we needed to end the day early.  I asked Dave that day if he was worried ever about his girls, getting to an age closing in on adulthood.  With me having only boys I see how boys are and wondered how he felt having just girls.  He told me he really did not worry.  That Carrie was the more serious and dependable one that he knew would make good decisions and truly succeed.  That Jennifer was his challenge, but that she really had a good head and would end up doing great things.  He absolutely trusted that both have grown up to learn what is right and would lead great lives.  He truly loved all three of his girls.

I had taken on a new job about 4 years ago that had me traveling a lot.  For the first two years Dave and I did not have the chance to get together for lunches and play like we had.  I got this email from him saying we both needed to step back from work and take a long guys weekend to Pinehurst for some golf, beer, and cigars.  I agreed but we never got to it.  Dave and Debbie made a trip to San Francisco one year and stopped by the Pebble Beach Golf Club.  Dave brought me home a ball marker from the club.  I was playing golf recently and not having the best of games.  We were in a competitive match and I was on the green.  I reached in my pocket and pulled out the Pebble Beach marker.  I immediately felt like Dave was there on the course with me, telling me to play "Smoooooth".  I made that putt and thought about Dave the rest of the round.  I know it is difficult to lose someone you love, but I also know he is there everyday.  Anytime you need him or wish you could talk to him, I can assure you he is listening and he is smiling.

I drove from Knoxville with my boss, Hal Kimrey (President of Microwave Materials Technologies) to meet with Dave at the Stock America office in Raleigh. We were planning on partnering with Stock on a new project. During our conversation I was so impressed with Dave's genuiness and sense of working together. Sometimes in these meetings there tends to be some "positioning" that takes place, but Dave was so open and transparent that I remember leaving and thinking "that was refreshing". He was very confident in what he did, but handled himself with humility towards others. On the drive back, I remember telling Hal, "I could enjoy working with that guy". Dave was one of the main reasons we chose to work with Stock America. Although no one will feel the pain that you and your girls have felt, there are a lot of us who wish we had gotten more time with Dave.

"When I get home from my job I turn on the TV,
But I can't keep my mind on the show.
When I lay down at night I can't get no sleep,
So I turn on the radio.
But the only sound I hear is you whispering in my ear...."

Hey girls, I am sure you are singing along already. I cannot imagine how much you miss your Dad. Almost a year has passed and I still feel the loss deeply. It is hard to lose a close friend, but nothing close to losing a husband and a parent. 

I've been reading down through the guest book entries and many of the them talk glowingly about how great your Dad was. I just want to set the record straight, your Dad was not a perfect man (how many of those have you ever met?). Let's run down the list of faults:
1. His taste in beer was questionable. 
2. He couldn't play a song all the way through.
3. He wouldn't let me win in tennis.
I could go on and on.

However, he had some redeeming qualities namely, honesty, integrity and a great lust for life. He was also very level-headed when it came to business. I really appreciated that especially when things got a little stressful with the beach house. It's a difficult thing to maintain a personal friendship with a business partner, but with Dave it was easy for me. He never let the business at hand get in the way of our friendship. 

Above all, he & I had great fun doing whatever we were doing, and to wrap this up here's a few memories of our time together that I will never forget and remember often:
1. Driving a U-Haul truck full of furniture to the beach house, and counting the number of tattoo parlors in Jacksonville on the way (I think we counted 18 and this was before the bypass opened).
2. Dismantling the four sets of bunk beds at the beach house so we could paint them white, and found that each piece needed about three coats of paint to hide the awful brown stain color that they were. 
3. Discovering that this wasn't so bad after a couple of six-packs.
4. Trying to walk a straight line down Highlands Bluffs (to your old house) after a blow-out party somewhere in Gray Mares Lane.

Remember that the people closest to us are just on loan to us from God. Make the most of the time you have, and value the time you had.

Dear Dave, 

we know each other of a couple of project we did. Already a couple of years ago we did the Kraft foods project and last year we worked closely together on the Lidestri project. Even with most contact going over email and the phone I got the chance to meet you on 2 sides. The first side is the professional  one. As your role for LAN you were in between the customer and us the supplier. Not always a easy Job as we were sometimes chasing you for information and details while the customer didnï¿½t had these details available. You managed to keep both sides happy and keep good track of all details. On meetings you were always well prepared and I sometimes was surprised how familiar you were with all technical challenges and details of the project. I also got the chance to meet the Dave which is not at work.  On the times I met you in the Netherlands and on project locations we several times had diner discussing and laughing about all kind of topics. Dave we will miss you as our proactive partner in the USA, but mostly we will miss you as a person.

I have expressed my condolences for Dave's passing, much too early, but memories keep coming back. Watching Chef Morimoto making Yellowfin Tuna Tartare reminded me of a fishing trip with Dave and one, at least, of his brother-in-laws. We had a great trip, catching 576 pounds of yellowfin, going back to the cabin. Some guys secured sushi makings, and with extremly fresh tuna, we made, ate, drank, yes, that's right, drank and enjoyed a great evening, enjoying Dave, his friends, and now mine, in a conclusion to an outing that expressed what I enjoyed most about Dave! His pure joy of living.

One of my favorite memories is the day we met Dave & Debbie.  My husband Dave and I went to Lincoln Park one day to play golf.  Lincoln Park is a 9 hole course on Milwaukee's east side.  We were waiting for our tee time to be called and decided to practice putting on the putting green.  And there was Dave, giving Debbie a putting lesson before they went out on the course.  We were delighted to find out that the four of us were put in the same foursome.  We had a wonderful round of golf and learned a lot about each other.  We kept in touch and continued to play golf together and get together socially.  A while later, we decided to join a golf league and after playing a year or two in that golf league, we decided to form our own league.  Dave was a fun person to play golf with.  He had a great attitude.  One time when we were playing at Currie Park Golf Course, he pulled his shot to the left on a par 3 hole located right along the freeway.  We're pretty sure his ball bounced down the ramp.  We never heard any screeching tires, so we don't think he hit any cars, but we never let him forget about it.  We played in our golf league together for quite a few years and watched them move from their apartment in Milwaukee to a beautiful home in Elm Grove, and increase their family from two to four.  We were sad to see them move to North Carolina, but we knew it was a good move for them as a family.  We will always remember his great smile and the twinkle in his eye.

We have so many wonderful memories of Dave and Debbie at neighborhood get togethers---cook-outs, parties, New Years Eve celebrations.  Dave always greeted us with his beautiful warm smile and a big hug.  We still  picture him standing with a group of friends, laughing, sharing stories and always having such a good time.  He was so much fun---we all just loved being with him.

We are so sorry for your loss.  Dave was vibrant and too alive to leave all of us this soon.  We have thought of you all often this year but do not want to pry as you adjust to your life without your husband, your father, our friend.  So in response, we wanted to share a bit of our time with your husband and father….
We just knew it was going to be a great time on so many levels when Dave Polvino was involved.  Why?  
Dave was one of the most positive, honorable, fun people that Bill and I have ever known.  This may seem like a small example but it describes how Polvinos and Terrills interacted.  We were driving back from Washington, D.C., about a year ago.  As we drove into North Carolina, it was just another one of those perfect days for anything.  As we got closer to Cary, I began thinking of everything to do:  unpack, buy groceries, do laundry, prepare for week, etc.  As we rolled up to the Cary Parkway-Tryon Road intersection, we stopped next to Dave and Debbie's car.  We both waved, rolled down the window and Dave said, “Tennis later?”  Oh, yes, instantly, we were all in agreement!  Turns out they were returning from a wedding.  We knew we would all have a good, competitive time on the courts later!   No matter what we had going, the four of us would squeeze in a tennis time most weekends if possible.
We had a lot in common:  both of us had two children each; loved tennis and a good time; a work hard/played hard mentality; a love of the beach or just loved where we were at when we were there!  
A party at the Polvino's was going to be a great time.  Dave was a gregarious host and would have everyone laughing, always!  (Debbie, you get a lot of credit for those great parties, too!)
One of our favorite memories is staying at the Polvino's beach house.  We loved to go with our family and chill:  breath-taking view, biking, runs on the beach and tennis nearby.  It just couldn't get better.  But it did get better when Dave was there:  we would play mixed doubles in the morning; happy hour in the evening on the deck; grilled dinners and fun nights.
Dave was a gentleman, a great sport and fierce competitor.  It was our honor and privilege to have known him, and to spend time with Dave and Debbie.  We are both better people for these great times and memories.  We know that Dave is smiling right now and still watching over you all.  And of this we are sure:  God will keep him in the palm of his hands.

I knew Dave my sophmore year @ Hobart/William Smith and he was a lot of fun to be around. Thinking about him after all these years has brought back a bunch of nice memories.

Dave was a personal friend and very respected food industry colleage. As so many of us appreciate, Dave's professional competencies helped pioneer and support important technology advances for the food industry resulting in safer and improved quality foods for consumers. Dear Mrs. Polvino and Girls:  When I opened the paper today and saw Dave's picture, my heart sank.  My name is Kathy Sutehall and I grew up in Silver Creek with Dave, who we called Davey.  I now live in Knightdale.  Dave, my sister and I had such fun together in high school and during summer vacations from college.   But as often happens, we lost touch and went our separate ways.  Dave was a wonderful guy back then and I could tell from seeing the pictures in the photo gallery that he was still a wonderful human being.  Looking back now, I can see that he was meant to be a generous and loving father and husband, and it appears that is exactly what he was.
