She was born February 16, 1935 in Ansonville, N.C. She was the daughter of the late Ila Simmons Ballard and T.C. Ballard.
After raising her four children, Elizabeth went to work for K-Mart. After retiring from there as a Pharmacy Technician, she took the same position with Kerr Drug until her retirement.
Elizabeth became known as Mema to everyone in her later years. This was even reflected on her name tag at Kerr Drug. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend. Elizabeth attended Westover United Methodist Church where she was very active until health issues prevented her from doing so. She loved sewing and one of her passions was to make a quilt for every baby born to family and friends. She was an avid Scrabble player but if she could find no takers, was happy with Solitaire. Her all time favorite hobby was fishing at the beach. In fact, her family is confident she is fishing in Heaven.
She leaves behind 4 children, Melissa Crowder (Chris) of Cary, Betsy Wolicki (Tom) of Raleigh, Perry Carter, III of Raleigh and William Carter (Anjanette) of Cary. She had nine grandchildren, Michael, Curby, Lily, Tabatha, Christa, Sally, Aaron, Sara and Jackson; and seven great grandchildren, Kiersten, Aaliyah, Sadie, Michael, Julia, Cameron and Shannon.
As her family mourns, they give praise that Elizabeth has seen the face of Jesus.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her brother, William Clyde Ballard, the father of her children, Perry S. Carter, Jr. and her beloved niece Patty Stein.
A time of visitation will be held from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Saturday June 3, 2017 at Westover United Methodist Church, 300 Powell Dr. in Raleigh, N.C. where a memorial service will begin at 11:00.
Arrangements are under the care of Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Rd., Cary N.C.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to Westover United Methodist Church.
