Frank J. Hanrahan, 92, beloved father and grandfather, passed away peacefully in Cary on January 6, 2016. He was born January 9, 1923 in New York City. He married the love of his life, the late Muriel Hanrahan (Hernan) on September 26, 1948. They were happily married for 53 years.
Frank was preceded in death by his loving wife, Muriel and son, Thomas. Frank is survived by his daughter, Lynn Raulet and husband Rich; his granddaughter Allyson Barnhart and husband Ryan; his grandson, Patrick Raulet; his sister, Rosemary Kenney and husband Ronnie; his sister, Dorothy Brady; and two great grandchildren, Madyson and Elyse Barnhart.
Frank was a WWII veteran who proudly served on the USS Canberra from 1942-1946 in the Asiatic Pacific region where his ship was struck by enemy fire. After his honorable discharge in 1946, Frank joined New York’s Finest and again served to protect until his retirement from the NYPD in 1973 at age 50. He went on to hold the position of Director of Security for Warner Communications in NYC for 10 years. He enjoyed the next 33 years of retirement.
After spending most of his life in NYC, Frank moved to North Carolina to be near his daughter and grandchildren after the death of his beloved wife. He enjoyed his life at Heritage Pines and was very active in the community. He enjoyed cooking for the mens’ breakfasts, line dancing, book club, the famous ROMEO club (Retired Old Men Eating Out), pool league, sailing model yachts in the lake, Cary senior games, and he loved having a beer and a bite to eat at Connelly’s (Doherty’s). Frank was devoted to his family and loved all the family get-togethers. He was so happy to have lived to see his precious great grandchildren, Madyson and Elyse. Our cherished memories of Frank include his strong Christian faith, his generous and loving spirit, his wonderful sense of humor, his positive attitude and his bright smile. Frank will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
