Frederick (Fred) Norton Seeger died peacefully on Wednesday, June 18, with his wife of almost 72 years, Marie Holland Seeger, by his side. Fred was born in Olean, New York, May 7, 1932, to Everett Harold Laverne Seeger and Ruth Norton Seeger. He is predeceased by his parents and his two older siblings, Everett Harold Seeger, Jr. and Betty Lou Seeger Gupton. His family moved around but finally settled in Cary, NC, when he was 12.
Fred served in the US Air Force and did a tour of duty in Korea. After his service, Fred began a successful career as a salesman. From Singer sewing machines to Lorillard Tobacco to candy of all sorts, he won many regional and national sales awards. He was known as the “Candy Man” because he frequently shared candy at Kathy’s schools and always provided candy for our Santa Claus in Cary. From his time as a teenager, Fred helped his father build houses around Cary. Fred became a gifted craftsman remodeling houses, building custom cabinets, and helping the church, neighbors, and family.
Fred and Marie traveled extensively, frequently with his brother or Marie’s sisters and their spouses or their close church friends. Fred was a huge sports fan, enjoying UNC football and basketball as well as the Braves and the Yankees. Fred also served the Lord through his many roles at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary where he and Marie became members in 1966. Fred was a high school Sunday School teacher, deacon, Sunday School Director, a member of almost every committee in the church, and a faithful member of his Sunday School class. In retirement, Fred was a member of the Cary Kiwanis and Cary Crimestoppers and enjoyed his work with those organizations. He developed strong friendships that lasted throughout his declining health.
Fred was a doting father to Kathy. They played games, watched favorite TV programs, and discussed politics. They attended many sporting events together over the years as well as concerts of his favorite singers. Fred taught Kathy about repairing things around the house with her handing him tools.
Fred is survived by Marie, the love of his life; Kathy and her husband Michael Rhoades; brother David Seeger (Kay); nephews Walter Mann (Rhonda), Mark Mann (Susan), and Christopher Seeger (Barbara); nieces Cynthia Shackleford (Tim), Melinda Murphy, Tanya O’Mahoney (Patrick), Heather Gunter (Jeremy), and a host of close family, in particular, Thomas Mann, Rachel Mann, Stephen Mann, and Alyson Mann. The family greatly appreciates Fred’s caregivers, Darlene Gardner and Anne Sanders, and their dedicated neighbors Lewis and Lynny.
A service of remembrance will be held on Saturday, July 26, at 3:00 pm in the chapel at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home on Maynard Road in Cary. The family will receive friends in the chapel after the service.
The family requests donations in Fred’s memory to the Greenwood Forest Baptist Church HVAC Fund, 110 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511 or Heartland Hospice, 4515 Falls of Neuse Road, Suite 420, Raleigh, NC 27609. Fred’s ashes will be interred at the columbarium at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in a private service.
