Hugh Houck Gelston

Hugh Houck “Juggy” Gelston, 84, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on June 30, 2021. He was born on May 5, 1937 in Baltimore, MD to Major General George Morris Gelston (Adjutant General of Maryland National Guard) and Jeanne Williams Houck Gelston.

He was raised in Lutherville, MD, and married JoAnn Campofreda, also from Baltimore. They had 5 children together.

Hugh went to Boys Latin in Baltimore where he excelled in football and lacrosse, then attended UVA as a lacrosse player. He kept his competitive spirit alive by coaching and watching his children (then his grandchildren and nieces) compete in their favorite sports. He became an avid golfer, and always loved his WAHOOS!

He was the President of Gelston and Associates before his retirement.

Hugh is survived by his 5 children, Lisa Murphy (Dean), Tracey Roos (John), Jeanne Edwards (Garry), Suzanne Burns (Chad), all of Cary, and Hugh Gelston, Jr. (Michelle) of Apex; sisters, Susan (Thomas) Mink and Anne (Fraser) Hubbard of Baltimore; 13 grandchildren, Georgeanna and Maxx Murphy, Nick Roos, Zack Roos and Carly Roos Laing, Hannah, Steven and Chesley Edwards, Chasey and Hugh Gelston, III, Sydney, Sophie and Josie Burns; 8 great grandchildren; his nieces and a nephew; his stepsons, Jeff (Heidi) Clower of Summerville, SC, and Todd (Amy) Clower of Charlotte, NC, and their seven children.

A caring brother, father and beloved grandfather, he kept his sense of humor until the very end, laughing and finishing songs and jokes with his family, especially humoring his grandchildren. He was the most fun grandad they all loved! He will be dearly missed, and remembered for his wit and charm by his family, friends, and those who were lucky enough to know him in his lifetime.

His family invites you to join them in celebrating his life at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 SE Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511 on Sunday, July 11, 2021 at 2pm. The family will receive guests immediately following the service.
