Jean P. Smith was born in Bloomburg, Texas in December of 1929. She graduated from Texas College for Women in 1949 and married William (Bill) Smith in 1950 (died in 2001). They lived in various places with their two children (Ginny and Peggy) when Bill was in active military service (U.S. Army) before settling in Cary in 1972. Bill went on to have a second career as a prosecutor, and later, as a private practice attorney.
Jean began her Real Estate Career with Fonville Morisey Real Estate in 1975. She became VP & Manager for the remainder of her 33 years in Real Estate. Jean was a Member of the Raleigh Board of Realtors and was elected President for the year of 1990. In 1994, Jean was named Realtor of the Year. Then in 2002, she was inducted into the Realtor Hall of Fame. That was the first year that the award was given in an awards ceremony.
Jean was very active in Rotary and various other charitable activities over the years. She also enjoyed golf, bridge, cooking and international travel.
Jean and Bill were longtime members of Edenton Street United Methodist Church in Raleigh. After Bill's death, Jean became a member of First United Methodist Church of Cary. Jean received Jesus as her Savior at an early age. But she grew in her Christian walk in a substantial way as a result of a friend asking her to join BSF (Bible Study Fellowship). She was frequently heard over the years to say, "I want to be a blessing." And she really was - a blessing and a role model to all who knew her. Jean died peacefully on Saturday morning July 5th, and entered into her reward.
Jean is survived by her daughters Ginny Smith and Peggy Morgan, and by her grandson Robert Aaron Morgan.
A visitation will be held between 9:45-10:45 on Thursday, July 10th, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home (200 SE Maynard Rd, Cary, NC) with a funeral service for Jean following at 11am. The graveside service will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
