He received a B.A. from the University of Sioux Falls in South Dakota, an M.A. from Indiana University, and a PhD from Penn State University. Ray was a Professor in the Department of Communication at NCSU for 30 years and is the author and editor of numerous scholarly articles and books. He is a former president of the Carolinas Communication Association.
Ray was an active member at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary, NC, where he was a Deacon, Sunday School teacher, choir member, and served on many committees. He enjoyed volunteering and sat on the first Board of the Triangle Aphasia Project Unlimited, an organization that was particularly important to him as he faced the challenges of living with aphasia after a stroke.

A service celebrating Ray’s life will be held Saturday, October 21 at 3pm at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church. Visitation and a reception will be held immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.
