Born in Fort Branch, Indiana, Linda built a life defined by determination, loyalty, and quiet strength. She lived in Bloomington while attending Indiana University, later made her home in Carmel, Indiana while raising her daughters, and most recently resided in Cary, North Carolina. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Indiana University and took great pride in being an “old school” accountant. Throughout her career, she held numerous corporate positions as an individual contributor, always insisting that things be accurate, correct, and done the right way.
Linda’s personal world was rich with the rituals and passions that made her unmistakably herself. She loved bourbon happy hours on the porch, where conversation and companionship were as important as the drink in her hand. She kept an immaculate home and took genuine joy in maintaining a beautiful yard — picking up every stick, leaf, and weed in sight. A fiercely loyal Indiana University alumna, she never missed a chance to talk about her time on campus during the Bobby Knight era, proudly sharing that she’d been in classes with members of those legendary teams. She often said she would go to the Rose Bowl if Hoosier Football ever earned their way. She was able to watch them go all the way with an historic, undefeated season. She cherished girls’ trips with her favorite ladies from Indiana, traveling to fun places and laughing in the way only lifelong friends can. Her strong, confident opinions were a hallmark of her personality, often punctuated with her signature phrase, “to be honestly truthful.” Through every challenge, her grit and presence were unmistakable — it was impossible to be stronger than her.
Linda is survived by her partner of more than 12 years, Greg Duell; her daughters Jamie (Jason) and Jenna (Shawn); her brother Denny (Donna); her sister Lois; and her grandchildren Kendyl, Macey, Tanner, Christopher, Kimber, Caden, and Tytus. She was predeceased by her sister Janet (Randy) and by her parents, Nolan Swader and Imogene Sollman. She also leaves behind many beloved friends who loved her for her fierce loyalty, her unfiltered honesty, and the unmistakable fire in her spirit.
Though not bound by marriage, Linda embraced Greg’s family as her own. She spent meaningful time with his children, Nathan Duell and Hannah Duell; with Nathan’s wife Kat; and with their children, Jameson and Teagen. She also formed warm bonds with Greg’s mother, Jan Duell (Gary) of Woodbridge, VA, and his sister, Susan Alfaro (Carlos) of Fairfax Station, VA. She loved all of them with the same devotion she gave her own family, and they loved her in return. Kat’s mother captured Linda’s impact beautifully, writing:
“I thanked her for her friendship. I thanked her for her honest brutal thoughts. I told her she brought me such love and a bond that came late in life for us, but that it was a gift I knew God had given to me. I thanked her for making me laugh, hard… I thanked her for accepting our kids as family… I told her I would tell stories of her and I with Jameson and Teagen and they would forever know her… The pain I feel now I know will subside, but my love and affection for her will live on.”
The family is deeply grateful for the compassionate care provided by the leadership and staff of Transitions Life Care in Cary, NC, as well as the oncology and radiology teams at Duke Women’s Cancer Care in Raleigh.
In accordance with her wishes, no service will be held.
