

Mr. Lyon Michael Barry Kay, lovingly known as Barry, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2025, in Cary, North Carolina, at the age of 81. Born on February 7, 1943, in Wallasey, England, he was the son of the late Dorothy Patricia Kay and the late Adolf Lyon Kay.
Barry’s journey to the United States began early, through Canada, culminating in his becoming a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1963. He attended South High School in Cleveland, Ohio, and pursued higher education at Ohio State University and Kent State before proudly serving his country.
In 1966, Barry enlisted in the U.S. Army, graduating from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He served in Europe from 1966 to 1968 and remained in the Army Reserves until 1972. His dedication to service exemplified his quiet strength and commitment to a greater purpose.
Barry met the love of his life, Pat, on June 27, 1968, and knew within two days that he wanted to marry her. True to his word, they wed on June 28, 1969, embarking on a beautiful journey of love and partnership that spanned over 55 years.
In 1968, Barry began his illustrious 48-year career with IBM. His work took him to Cleveland, Ohio; Raleigh, North Carolina; Poughkeepsie, New York; and Cary, North Carolina. Known for his patience, problem-solving skills, and ever-present twinkle in his eye, Barry was beloved by colleagues and friends alike. Whether sharing a joke or lending a helping hand, he touched countless lives with kindness and generosity.
To those who knew him best, Barry was a master storyteller, a source of wise counsel, and a man of deep integrity. A skilled craftsman, he believed in measuring twice and cutting once. Quick-witted and even-tempered, he never raised his voice but always raised spirits. He had a special place in his heart for animals, cherishing the family pets throughout the years.
Of all his roles in life, none brought him greater joy or pride than being a father. Barry is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Kay, and their children: Jennifer, Adam, and Sara. He also leaves behind his granddaughter, Emilia.
Barry is further survived by his beloved siblings, Sheila Kay Twyman and David Kay, who will forever treasure his memory.
Barry’s legacy is one of love, kindness, and quiet strength. His life was a testament to the power of family, hard work, and compassion, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of Barry’s life will be held on January 31st,2025 at 1pm located at White Plains Methodist Church. 313 SE Maynard Rd, Cary, NC 27511.
