Martha was an educator and an artist who had an immense love of learning. She was very proud of her work in desegregation of the school systems in eastern North Carolina. She was also very involved in the National Education Association, N.C. Association of Classroom Teachers, and Who’s Who in South and Southwest. Martha was active in Asbury Methodist Church and Otto community as well as taking part in the Western N.C. Alliance. For years, she was also an active civic volunteer and a Brownie Girl Scout leader.
Survivors include her daughter, Thalia Ashton and husband James of Cary, NC; grandchildren, Taylor Ashton, and Jamie Ashton; sister Mary Lou Brown; nephew Jimmy Brown; brother Charles Allen Moffitt; and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Wood in 2008.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
