Mildred Nuckolls Bartlett

She was born in Buford, GA to O.T. (“Bud”) and Margaret Nuckolls. After losing her mother as an infant, she was raised by her father and stepmother, Annie Nuckolls.

Mildred is a graduate of Georgia Baptist School of Nursing. After marrying Bobby L. Bartlett in 1952, they lived in Alabama, Florida, and New York, before finally settling in North Carolina. After a distinguished career, she retired from Rex Hospital in 1995, where she spent her final 14 years as Director of Women’s Services. In retirement, Mildred continued her service to others as a dedicated volunteer in her church, with the Wake County Health department, and as a Wake County Guardian Ad Litem.

Mildred enjoyed bridge, cooking for family and friends, and traveling. She was deeply committed to her community and loved spending time with her family. Everyone who knew her well recognized her strength, her humor, and her unmistakable presence.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Boggs, and her husband of 41 years, Bobby L. Bartlett.

Mildred is survived by her children, Timothy Bartlett (Jerry Tolson Bartlett) of Raleigh, and Melissa Swirski (Richard) of Cary; six grandchildren, Thomas Bartlett (Kayley), Nathaniel Bartlett, Stephanie Bartlett, Katherine Swirski, Elizabeth Swirski, and Caroline Swirski; four great-grandchildren, James, Robert, Elise, and Warren Bartlett; and several nephews.

The family wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to the dedicated staff at Glenaire Retirement Community’s East House for the compassionate care provided in her final years.

A funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cary, North Carolina, on April 11, 2026, at 2:00 p.m., with a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Mildred Bartlett Nursing Scholarship, established in her honor, at Meredith College.
