Born in Queens, New York, Woody brought with him a resilient spirit and a love for life that shaped every chapter that followed. He is survived by his former wife, and mother of his three beloved children—Richard David Wood, Heather Wood Bettis Mottola, and Elizabeth Wood—as well as his cherished grandchildren: Michael Urrata, Matthew Urrata, and Sophia Bettis.
Those who knew Woody knew his truest companions were often found at the end of a leash. His three dogs were his loyal champions, his joy, and his daily motivation. Whether hiking through the town park or taking quiet walks through the neighborhood in later years, Woody found peace and happiness in their company.
An avid tennis enthusiast, Woody played the game with passion for many years.
Even as time passed and his knees slowed him down, he held onto hope that surgery might one day return him to the court he loved.A familiar face in Pittsboro, Woody and his dogs were a well-known and well-loved presence in several local restaurants. His witty, sometimes slightly outrageous sense of humor, paired with a calm and loving soul, left an impression on everyone he met. He had the rare ability to balance mischief with grace, always leaving people smiling. Well, mostly.
To know Woody was to love him. He was deeply kind and generous, which earned him a permanent place in the hearts of his friends, neighbors, and family.
He will be deeply missed and joyfully remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A celebration of life for Richard will be held Saturday, May 10, 2025 from 2:00 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 Southeast Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511.
