He is survived by his wife of 59 years Deborah Stallings Carawan, son, Russell Carawan (Bridget), daughter, Ashley White, sisters Beverly Carawan, and Mary Ellen Carawan, brother Jeff Carawan (Chris), loving nephews, nieces, and a great nephew and niece.
Roy dedicated his life to researching and improving the food processing industry. He completed both his BS and MS in Food Science at North Carolina State University. After leaving briefly to complete his PhD in food science and nutrition at Ohio State University he returned to the Wolfpack to serve as a professor and food engineering extension specialist for decades.
He was regarded as a leading international authority in food processing plant design, water conservation, pollution prevention, waste reduction, and environmental concerns. He authored countless papers, gave numerous presentations, and consulted on more than 100 projects dealing with the efficiency and environmental sustainability of food processing. Having worked with industrial clients, cities, states, and the US EPA, he received many awards and accolades for his tireless work in his field.
His love for NC State was unfading and he was a season ticket holder for both football and basketball for more than 50 years. In addition to supporting his favorite team, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the outdoors.
Following a stroke, Roy received loving care at Brookdale MacArthur Park for over nine years and special care for the last two years. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the expertise of Dr. Berry and his staff at the Duke Cancer Center in their compassionate care for Roy.
Roy was generous, kind, fun, and had a special way of making one feel seen and valued. His attentiveness extended even beyond his own family and was felt by friends and acquaintances alike. His friendly “good mornings” lit up the faces of everyone he met.
There will be a celebration of life held for Roy at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 20, at White Plains United Methodist Church. There will be a reception following the service.
