

Sally Spencer Cox passed away peacefully April 14, 2023. She was born in Roanoke, Virginia to William Robert Spencer and Nelia Spencer. A star student throughout school, she was taught a strong work ethic at home and was involved in many extracurricular activities including playing clarinet in the school band.
After completing a degree in journalism from Virginia Commonwealth University, she pursued a career in that field. Eventually moving back to her hometown with her young son Nathan she successfully worked in real estate. In the mid-eighties, she began a career in insurance with State Farm that would last for 35 years. After landing in an agency in Cary, NC Sally grew her very successful business earning many sales and service awards.
Sally believed in believed in giving back to her community and being active in community affairs. She was a member of the Cary Rotary Club, participating in many community improvement events. She also supported the arts in the Cary community serving as president of the Cary Visual Arts Society, as well as supporting numerous local charities. Sally never met a stranger and always looked for ways to help anyone she met.
Whatever life threw at Sally, she handled it with grace and determination. A cancer survivor, she continued to work and care for her family while undergoing surgery and radiation treatments. Few people were ever aware of her challenges.
While thought of as a very outgoing personality, at home Sally was a kind, gentle, amazingly inspiring woman who was a mentor and best friend to her son Nathan and a beautiful, loving wife to Ken.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Susan. She is survived by her husband Ken Powell and son Nathan Cox as well as three brothers, William Robert Spencer, Jr. (Debbie) Joel Spencer, and James Randall Spencer, all of Roanoke Virginia, daughter-in-law Tish Williams (Richard), grandson Heath Williams, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff of Lynn’s Care Home at Sandy Forks for the steadfast, compassionate and comforting care they provided Sally.
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church in Cary - a Light Reception will follow in the Fellowship Room. A video of the service may be found below under Past Services - please fast forward to 40:00.
A Celebration of Life Service will also be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at 2:00 pm at Oakey's Funeral Home - South Chapel - 4257 Brambleton Avenue - Roanoke, Virginia - reception to follow as well.
