Sarah was a loving wife, devoted mother, and cherished friend. She graduated from Meredith College with a degree in Social Work. While she would eventually return to Meredith to work in the Admissions Department for many years, she first spent several years helping children in the foster care system. In later years she devoted herself to volunteer work at both Forest Hills Baptist Church in Raleigh, and later Westwood Baptist Church in Cary.
Her most cherished roles, though, were those of wife and mother. After meeting John in college, they went on to be married for sixty-five years, enjoying and enduring all of life's triumphs and challenges side by side. When their daughter, Jennifer, was in school, Sarah made sure that her job at Meredith College followed the school calendar, so she never missed Jennifer's school-related games, plays, or summer vacations. It's also worth noting that she made the best birthday cakes and Halloween costumes a kid could ever ask for.
Sarah filled her free time with a broad array of hobbies, but voracious reading was first on the list. A devoted library patron, she could often be found wandering the aisles in search of either the latest bestseller, or an obscure title that only ten other people have ever heard of. She could also be found at various times doing yarn and needlework crafts, solving crossword puzzles, baking, gardening, traveling, walking miles with her friend Pat Cohen, or keeping up ongoing correspondence with friends in far-flung locations. She was also active in several social groups including The Red Hat Society and a local Bunco group.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Derrick and her son-in-law, Jimmy Derrick. Survivors also include two nephews and two nieces. Her husband, John Edward Watts preceded her in death.
The family wishes to thank her team of caregivers from A Better Solution in Home Care and Transitions LifeCare Hospice who made her last days easier. Special thanks to Jasmine, Nikki, Lakeshia, Angela, and Amira.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 28th, 2025 at 11:00AM at Raleigh Memorial Park. Brown-Wynne Funeral Home of Cary is handling arrangements for the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Second Chance Pet Adoptions of NC.
