Tim graduated from Plymouth Whitemarsh High School in 1976. He performed in the marching band, The Plymouth Whitemarsh Marching Colonials, played the flugelhorn, and was a member of the State and National marching band champions in the fall of 1974 and 1975. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Architectural Engineering. While at Penn State, he participated in the Student Society of Architectural Engineers.
After graduating from Penn State, he started his career at Heery International at their Atlanta, GA headquarters where he began in the engineering division. His first promotion was in 1984 when he transferred to Heery’s Burbank, CA office to manage the construction of a new headquarters for the Lockheed Federal Credit Union. When construction was completed in 1987, Tim was hired by the credit union to manage their banking facilities statewide. During that time he completed qualifications as a Certified Facility Manager through the International Facility Managers Association (IFMA). Tim returned to work for Heery in 1989 (Baltimore, MD office) when he was offered the opportunity to manage construction of a multi-building corporate campus for the headquarters of Freddy Mac loan company in McLean, VA.
Once that project was completed, Heery asked Tim to take over management of the merger of the Burroughs Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham pharmaceutical companies in the Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina. He started work on the project in 1995 and transferred to Heery’s Raleigh, NC office in 1996. As Heery’s Raleigh office continued to grow, Tim managed progressively more projects (including construction management of several YMCA facilities) as the Program Director and was eventually promoted to Vice President of Carolinas Program Management. Tim started at the YMCA of the Triangle in 2015. From 2015 to the Present, he served as their Senior Vice President of Real Estate Development and Facility Management. He helped to spearhead many revitalization projects, new construction, and community development programs and projects during his time at the YMCA of the Triangle.
He was an IFMA Certified Facility Manager and LEED AP O + M certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional in Operations and Maintenance). His heart and soul were driven by helping others and thanks to his extensive background, he has helped to serve on and at; The Carying Place, Greenwood Forest Baptist Church, IFMA (International Facility Management Association) Greater Triangle Chapter, Rotary Club of Cary, and many other local organizations.
Tim is preceded in death by his father, Harris Armstrong Carr. He is survived by his son, Daniel Owen Carr, and Daniel's mother, Cindy Simpson, who Tim was married to for 34 years. Tim is also survived by his mother, Ann Alcott (Owen) Carr, his sister, Emilie Carr, and his life-long best friend, Jeff Smith.
Tim’s hobbies and interests were broad, as he loved being outdoors but also his kind and giving heart always attracted him to making the world we have to live in a better place. You could find him doing any of these on a given day:
Sailing and going to the beach
Being outdoors, hiking, kayaking, and biking
Attending auto races at Virginia International Raceway with his son and friends
Serving others and helping the community
Teaching and mentoring young professionals and members of his community
Exploring craft beer with his son and friends
Discussing science, technology, space exploration, the history of the world/universe, the human condition, and his faith.
Tim was well loved and will be missed by so many; not only his personal family but his church family, his YMCA family, and those who gleaned knowledge from him.
There will be a memorial service on Sunday, August 25th, 2024 at 4:00 p.m. at the Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary. Afterwards a private interment will take place in the church columbarium where Tim chose to be his final resting place.
