

She was raised in Woodside, NY with her parents and her brother Jack. During WWII she worked for the United States Army as a civilian employee at Mitchel Field in Long Island, NY. Throughout her career she worked for St. John’s University and CUNY. Virginia enjoyed many family vacations at Hudson Guild Farm in Andover, NJ.
Virginia was predeceased by her husband James Bernard McDermott, her son James Brian McDermott, two granddaughters Kara and Kathryn McDermott, and her son-in-law Jack Fanning.
She is survived by her son Thomas McDermott and wife Darlene of Levittown, NY, daughter Maureen Fanning of West Hempstead, NY, and Eileen Herbst and husband Jim of Cary; 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 pm Monday September 25, 2017 at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church 625 Magdala Place Apex, NC 27502.
