Bell Abraham was born on 30 Jarvis Street (Vistabella/San Fernando) in Trinidad and Tobago on December 4, 1930. Bell was the youngest of 7 siblings, born to Traysier (“Sylvia”) and Baloo Nair (Abraham). His siblings were: Miriam, Doris, Rosie, Sonny, Dorothy, and Evelyn. He was the proud uncle of the Papit, Leeling, Gangaram, Hosein, Chinemilly, & Abraham families, and cousin of the Koran and Narine families.
Bell spent his childhood in Trinidad where he attended Vistabella Canadian Mission School before venturing off to Venezuela and England as a young adult. In Trinidad, his family was large, and even embraced many others like family, including residents of their neighborhood affectionately known as, “The Happy Hill.”
Bell loved to go dancing with his sister, Evelyn, and he also shared a lot of time with his brother, Sonny. Bell migrated to New York where he eventually met his wife-to-be on a blind date in 1964; they married on June 9, 1967 in Newark, New Jersey. Bell and Lilia had their first child, Bell Antonio Abraham, in Brooklyn in 1971, moved to South Florida in 1972, and then had their daughter, Indira Leila Abraham, in 1972. They settled in their long-term home in Winston Park (in the West Kendall area of Miami) in 1976. For a while, Bell worked 2 jobs as his wife cared for their young children. Bell was a devoted husband and father: a family man. He always made time to take his family to various beaches- Key Biscayne, Crandon Park, Matheson Hammocks-, Disney, Key West, Marco Island, Sanibel Island, the Sea Aquarium, fishing/crabbing, fruit & plant festivals, Native American pow-wows, and many other places and events. Bell also treasured his large plot of land at his Winston Park Home; he took great pride and care of the many tropical fruit trees he planted himself, and would often spend most of the afternoons and weekends on his land and in his hammock napping. He made a mini-golf course for Antonio and Indira on this land, and later would build a treehouse for his treasured grandchildren next to one of his prized lychee trees that they indulged in.
Bell stayed in touch with many of his Trinidadian family members across the years, even as they spread out beyond the island. In 2007, Bell took his daughter and grandchildren to Trinidad for a special family reunion, where his one remaining sibling, Dorothy Nair Abraham-Hosein, was also in attendance. Bell appreciated this time with his family and carried fond memories with him of this special event. He remained in contact with various nieces, nephews, and cousins including Gail Gangaram, Molly Koran, Iverson Abraham, Jap Lee Ling, Camillan Hosein, Jennifer Hosein, Irvin Lee Ling, and Hazel Lee Ling.
Besides his family, Bell’s other passions were cheering for the Miami Hurricanes football team, eating (he loved food, all the time, especially curry everything), grilling his special hamburgers, spending time with his dogs, and admiring Native American culture. Bell retired from work just in time to enjoy being a grandfather, a role he completely embraced with all of his heart in his remaining years. In 2017, Bell, Lilia, and Antonio moved to Orlando to be closer to Indira and her family, and to see his grandchildren become wonderful young adults that he helped nurture with love.
Bell’s wife of 57 years preceded him in 2024. Bell is survived by his son: Bell Antonio Abraham, daughter: Indira Leila Abraham-Pratt, son-in-law: Tyrone Pratt, grandson: Andrew Pratt, granddaughter: Gillian Pratt, grandson: Terry Walker, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
