A Life Well Lived
Daniel David Woudenberg was born in Naperville, Illinois on September 7, 1994 to parents, Philip and Cindy Woudenberg. Dan passed on July 20th sometime in the afternoon. We have learned that Dan had several underlying conditions involving his heart, which both we and he were not aware of. A recent bout with Covid may have impacted and hastened his passing. He passed while lying on his outdoor patio in the sun, a place he often noted as a favorite of his.
Dan joined with his brother Michael in life, love, and adventure. Dan was 4 years younger than Mike, but they were best friends and because their birthdates were only 3 days apart, Mike considered Dan as his 4-year-old birthday present.
As Dan grew, he expressed many wonderful traits, including some incredible creativity and an eye for the interesting and beautiful. One time as a child, he took an entire Costco sized box of plastic spoons, knives and forks and taped together a giant cricket as large as the kitchen table. While mom was a bit mad about the loss of the utensils and tape, she took delight in just how creative and well done this impromptu project turned out.
Schooling
Dan went to a Christian School for the first 8 years, mostly at Paradise Valley Christian school, where he had many good memories with students and teachers. Some of these friendships continued throughout his life. He even considered his teachers as his friends. After 8th grade Dan asked if he could be homeschooled, which turned out to be a very good experience for him, and he tested out of high school a full year early. After that he took several classes at Phoenix Community College and then entered Dordt University in Sioux Center Iowa. He majored in digital media and graduated with his degree after 4 years. During that time, he became involved in many school and student activities, including working with the Dordt Advancement and Marketing departments. He was employed as the school photographer and was often asked to go on school trips all over the country to film for the school. He also developed so many great friendships with students that continued until his passing.
Work
After graduating from Dordt, he went to Chicago and worked with a television producer, Bill Curtis, and was involved in the production of the TV series, “American Greed”. It was during this time that he learned that making a living full time in this field was extremely difficult, so he started looking for something else.
Soon, he started working for a technology company based in Denver and moved to Castle Rock to be trained and start his career in technology. That job really got him even more interested in technology sales. He then moved to another company, InMotion Hosting, where he worked for 4 years. He applied himself completely to learn, and improve his sales skills, meeting or exceeding his quotas virtually every month, and was promoted to manager. As he started to realize that he wanted to learn more and have more responsibilities, he sought a new position with Liquid Web, where he started working on July 5th, 2022. He was so excited for this new opportunity and was looking forward to growing with the new job.
Church
Dan was baptized as a child and was very active in his church. After moving to Castle Rock, he joined the Plum Creek Church and became involved in many activities with the church. He used his digital media major background to help the church with many aspects of the video and audio production of services, something he enjoyed very much during the time he was involved. And most recently, as he was looking forward to starting the new job, he participated in a 20s and 30s rafting trip which was a real highlight of his summer this year. And with the new job, and new schedule, he was so looking forward to having time to become even more involved at Plum Creek Church.
Scouting
Dan also was very involved with the Boy Scouts along with his brother, and both of them achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Dan was involved in all of the usual scouting activities and earned many merit badges. Dan went to the Camp Geronimo Scout Camp when he was 9 and enjoyed the week so much that when he was 12 he asked to be a camp counselor, and he went there for a 6 week stay. Mom and dad were anxious for him while he was there on his own for such a long time, but our weekend visits were particularly special, and he showed that he was very capable of taking care of himself. While at that camp, he was one of the leaders for the rifle range and was NRA certified for training. He also joined the lifeguard program and became certified as a Red Cross certified lifeguard. When he was looking for work later, at age 15, he became the early morning lifeguard for the local YMCA. He was responsible for opening the pool 6am, which required him to get up at 5am to be ready to work. He did this for 3 years.
Dan exemplified and lived his life to the Scout Oath and Law: “On my honor, I will do my best. To do my duty, to God and my country, and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.”
Friendships and Family
Although Mike was Dan’s best friend and brother, Danny called many people his friends and treasured his relationships. He took great care and consideration of his friends and family. He was always showing his love and was always helping someone if he could. As a family, we loved his stories of his friendships and activities and those stories gave us comfort that he was living his life in fulness.
Dan loved his family, and we treasure every moment we got with him. He was faith in action and a true gift from the Lord. We are so honored to be his family and even though we miss him and feel like his life was cut short we have confidence that the Lord wanted him home. We now know where he resides and hold fast to the comfort that we will see him in glory with our heavenly Father.
