

Mary Jo McGraw, 83, of Castle Rock, Colorado passed away peacefully on, November 14, 2024, surrounded by her family. Born in Pierre, South Dakota, to the late Bernard and Wilma Vermeulen, Mary Jo's life was defined by love, warmth, and an unwavering devotion to her family.
At 15, Mary Jo met James T. McGraw, the love of her life, and they were married in 1958. Together, they raised eight children: Pat, Lisa, Mike, Julie, Tracy, Darcy, Sean, and Tara. Their family grew as they welcomed their spouses: Jennifer, George, Julie, Kevin, David, Dana, and Spike. Mary Jo cherished the deep bonds she shared with her siblings, in-laws, and extended family, and embraced all those who entered her life with kindness, laughter, and warmth.
Mary Jo loved life, especially the time spent with family and friends. She was known for her infectious sense of fun, which included gambling, traveling, visiting loved ones, and cruising. Whether at the casino, exploring new destinations, or relaxing on a cruise, she embraced every adventure with excitement and joy. She also found great fulfillment in coaching and cheering on her children as they grew up, playing sports and pursuing their passions. Her heart swelled with pride as she watched them thrive. But nothing brought her more happiness than the visits from family and friends, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Their presence lit up her world and filled her heart with love.
Known for her unwavering support and boundless love, Mary Jo was a pillar of strength. She was always there to offer guidance, comfort, and a listening ear. Her selflessness and the joy she spread will never be forgotten.
Mary Jo was the heart and soul of her family, a loving matriarch whose legacy will live on for generations. She is survived by her children and their spouses, 25 grandchildren and their spouses, 13 great-grandchildren, and her siblings Shirley Northrup (Harry), Ron Vermeulen (Lynette), and Gary Vermeulen (Max), as well as her sisters-in-law Judy Steele, Mary McGraw. Deanne Vermeulen, and Myrna Vermeulen.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James T. McGraw; her parents, Bernard and Wilma Vermeulen; her parents-in-law, James P. and Imo Jeanne McGraw; her brothers Dick and Tom Vermeulen; her sister-in-law Bonnie McGraw; and her brothers-in-law Robert Steele and Larry McGraw. Together, they will forever remain a guiding light to the family.
A celebration of Mary Jo's life will be held on January 24, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Francis of Assisi in Castle Rock, Colorado. A rosary will be offered at 9:30 A.M. for those who wish to attend. Following the service, a lunch will be served in Assisi Hall. Family and friends are invited to come together to remember a woman who lived a life filled with love, grace, and compassion.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a favorite charity in Mary Jo's honor.
