Rosella Marjorie Yuhl was born November 3, 1932. She was the fifth of seven children born to Henry and Margarthe (Oetting) Bentrup of Sylvan Grove, Kansas. She was baptized and confirmed in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Sylvan Grove. She attended parochial school and then Sylvan Grove High School graduating in 1950.
She graduated with a diploma in nursing from Asbury Hospital School of Nursing in Salina, KS in 1953. On August 29, she was married to Rudolph Meier of Lincoln, KS. They were blessed with four daughters. Rudy was a farmer and Rosella worked at the Lincoln County Hospital until Rudy died in 1968. The family relocated to Salina, where she worked at Asbury Hospital and attended Marymount College, graduating with a B.S.N. in 1970. She then worked as an educator at Asbury Hospital School of Nursing.
In August 1973 she was married to Henry Yuhl of Abilene, KS. They lived on a farm southeast of Abilene and Rosella was Director of Nursing at Enterprise Estates, a nursing home in Enterprise, KS. She also worked at the Abilene Hospital. Hank was diagnosed with cancer in1988 and passed away in February 1989. She relocated to Omaha, NE to join her daughter, Jan Meier. In 1991 Jan moved to Colorado and Rosella moved to Roseburg, OR to spend some time with daughter Barbara Holtz in Jacksonville, OR. Rosella worked at the VA hospital in Roseburg, OR. She saw an ad from a recruiter looking for nurses in Hawaii, she interviewed, was hired and then she traveled to Lihue on the Island of Kauai. It was supposed to be a 3-month assignment but after a hurricane wiped out the island she was asked to stay to help them out and she stayed until the end of year. Thus began her adventure as a travel nurse. She crisscrossed the country a couple times, traveled in all 50 states, and worked in 8 states. Two adventures really stand out. In Alaska she flew out to a village to do a Vacation Bible School with a missionary pilot for LAMP. It was a small village close to the Yukon River. The other adventure was while working in North Conway, NH where she was invited to help drive a 22’ RV loaded with medical supplies to San Salvador.
After retiring from nursing in 1999, Rosella moved to Castle Rock, CO to live with her daughter Jan Meier. Later that fall she attended a Lutheran retreat in the Colorado mountains where she met Doug Zuellner. They were married in February 2000. Rosella moved to Doug Zuellner’s farm outside Campbell, Nebraska. With Doug, Rosella continued to travel across the United States, Mexico, and Germany. When Doug passed away in February 2016, Rosella moved back to Castle Rock, Colorado to live with her daughter Jan Meier.
Always out for an adventure, Jan and Rosella continued to travel the world going to Australia and on cruises throughout North and South America. In Castle Rock, CO, Rosella joined Epiphany Lutheran Church and the local senior center. She played poker at the Senior Center on Tuesdays, attended "Bible Buddies" at Epiphany on Thursdays, and quilted with the Women’s Sewing Group at Epiphany on Fridays. Rosella was thrilled when she became a great-grandma, and she loved spending time with them.
Rosella lived a rich and fulfilling life. She had no fear of death. As her health declined, she had full confidence that she would be joining her Savior, Jesus Christ in Heaven upon her passing. She spent her final days cruising to Greenland and Canada with her daughter Jan Meier and son-in-law Joe Noonan. She passed away in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada with her daughters Jan Meier and Terri Link at her side.
Rosella is survived by her daughters, Susan (Joe), Terri (Al), Barbara, and Jan; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Rosella was preceded in death by her six siblings: Hulda Heine, Irene Harrison, Paula Yandell, Rolland Bentrup, Carol Bentrup, and Dale Bentrup.
