Spencer McCombs, 27 of Centennial, Colorado passed away on October 21, 2021 after complications due to esophageal cancer. He is survived by his parents Russ McCombs and Angela Smith, his brother Evan and sister Elleya, his grandparents Charlotte and Richard Swisher, Glenn and Pam McCombs, as well as his stepfather, stepmother, step siblings, step grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Spencer was born June 3, 1994 to Russ and Angela McCombs in Louisville, Colorado. From birth to six years, Spencer was an active ornery little boy who enjoyed basketball, hiking, riding his bike and playing with his brother, sister and friends. He was the shy observer who had a competitive nature and zest for life. As his brother Evan says, “Spencer was always trying to get as far away from supervision as he could so he could engage in the dangerous activities.” No one could beat him at One on One and that was his claim to fame.
Tragically in the summer of 2000, Spencer contracted viral encephalitis which caused global brain damage. For 21 years Spencer was cared for 24/7, and he fought for this life with his warrior spirit. His strength and perseverance taught everyone that knew him to Never Give Up. Those people who were closest to Spencer found a unique ability to communicate with him through his eyes. They could silently hear his “I Love You” and “Thank-you.” A mighty warrior within, Spencer’s spirit and deep spiritual relationship with God reaches to a depth only he can understand.
“It takes a whole village to raise a child.” African Proverb and what a village Spencer had! He would not have had the quality of life he had without all the help of family, friends, his nanny Nicole, the medical community, Wellington House and the outpouring of community support. Spencer had the beautiful blessing of so many who loved and cared for him. His family is so very grateful. Thank-you!
Fly free Spencer Lee. We will meet again and have our celebratory dance in heaven where you are whole. You will be remembered as our Voiceless boy who changed the world without one word. Your heart will be heard in your unspoken words through generations to come. Forever in our hearts.
Spencer’s Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 6th, at 1 pm at The Rock Church, 4881 Cherokee Drive, Castle Rock, CO 80109. Pastor J.R. Polhemus will officiate. Reception to follow.
