

Tom was born August 23, 1946, in Seattle, Washington, to Lewis Franklin Hykes and Mary Maxine Hykes. He was raised in Riverside, CA, and following high school he moved to Atwater, CA. Tom graduated from Fresno State College with a degree in electrical engineering followed by earning a California Certificate as a Professional Engineer. Following college, he joined the US Army serving from 1970 to 1972. Returning to Merced, Tom was employed by the Merced County Department of Environmental Services from 1973-1978. In 1978, he became a Federal Civil Service employee working as an engineer at Castle Air Force Base. In 1994, he transferred to the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO, retiring in December 2006. From 2008 to 2015 he was employed as a contractor in the Civil Engineering Department at the Academy. In 2015, Tom and Carolyn moved to Castle Rock, CO, to be nearer to family.
Tom was preceded in death by his father, mother brother Lewis, and sister Louise. He is survived by his sister Coyladene; his wife of 46 years, Carolyn (Carr); daughter Julie; son-in-law Curtis; granddaughters Caitlyn (US Navy) and Lauryn; grandsons Brayden and Ethan.
Tom will be laid to rest in the Garden of Peace at Evergreen Memorial Park, Merced, CA. Crypt-side service will be Friday, October 29, 2021 at 10:00 a.m.
