Just two months shy of his 103rd birthday, Alfred Frank Bucci passed away, April 16, 2026, in his home surrounded by his loving family.
Alfred was born in Baltimore, Maryland, June 17, 1923, to William Guerino, and Serafina (Liberto) Bucci. As a boy, he played golf at Carroll Park, enjoyed playing sports and riding his bike. He attended Southern High and rode his Model A car to school. At night he worked as a crane operator until he joined the United States Army answering the call to serve his country.
Alfred Bucci played an integral role while serving in the European theater as part of the Army’s 99th Infantry Division, Artillery Headquarters, and Headquarters Battery. He served with bravery and distinction in the Battle of the Bulge, the Ardennes, the Rhineland, Remagen Bridge and Ruhr Pocket. He also participated in the liberation of two POW camps, as well as the Waldager concentration camp.
The recognition that he earned included the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, French Legion of Honor, World War II Victory Campaign Medal, Belgian Fourragere, and a Meritorious Unit Award. After the war, he attended the annual Army’s 99th Infantry Division Association reunions to reacquaint with his war buddies.
In 1948 he married his beloved Caroline, and they were together for 57 years before her passing. He was then blessed with another love Carol Miller, his caring partner until his death.
Alfred was a successful businessman and founder of Al’s Billiards Supply Company Inc. and owned several billiard parlors throughout Baltimore City and County. In 1955 he moved his family to Catonsville, became an active member of the community and a friend to all.
An avid fisherman, he enjoyed summers in Ocean City, where he and Caroline hosted seafood feasts and block parties. During the winter, he was a devoted Colts/ Ravens fan and never missed a game. It became a family affair!!
His biggest joy was as a proud grandfather, attending every sports event, picking Nick up every day from school, playing and eating pizza together.
After he retired, he continued to work with George in the vintage furniture business as a mentor.
Many Memorial Days in DC he marched with his 99th Infantry Division comrades. Alfred joined VFW Post 7472, where he and Carol became active volunteer members. They participated in the Honor Flight greetings and various events. Alfred conducted multiple interviews about his service in World War II and granted zooms and talks with students around the world. He felt it was important to tell the stories to keep history alive. In his honor, the Warrior Canine Connection trained and gifted a service dog” BUCCI” to a veteran.
The Gary Sinise Foundation and the National World War II Museum invited him to attend a special tour of the Museum in New Orleans where he was honored and interviewed.
In 2017 he returned to the battlefields of France, Belgium and Germany in a bittersweet reunion, and then visited Normandy for an epic celebration with friends and family where he was awarded the French Legion of Honor.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Rose Fletcher, Anna Crosby, Marietta Baker, and Donald Bucci. He is survived by his daughter, Joyce Bucci, son-in-law, George Kondylas, grandson, Nicholas Kondylas, many nieces, nephews, and friends that were like family.
Alfred, had a big heart, a sharp wit and a wonderful talent for always making you feel better and helping you see the bright side of any situation with a few reassuring words or one of his famous stories. If you ever needed a lift or to feel good about anything, all you had to do was to call Al. He made everybody smile.
He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and countless extended family members, especially those who called him Pop Pop, and Al Pop. He lived life to the fullest.
In his last letter, he wrote:
“I had a great life and I loved every minute of it”. Love Alfred
