Alice A. Zimmerman was born and raised in Woodlawn, MD and spent many happy hours with her siblings picking strawberries for a penny a box, working in their garden, ice skating and going to the amusement park at Gwynn Oak. Alice also enjoyed fishing and crabbing with her father at the church picnic.
As a teen she enjoyed going with friends to the movies and dancing at Kahill in Catonsville.
Alice attended Catonsville High School where she enjoyed participating in and watching sports. She graduated in 1948 and went to work for Calvert Fire in Baltimore. She rode the trolley from Woodlawn with her friends Betty Mathena and Betty Marr.
In 1951 she married the boy next door, well, across the street, the love of her life, Buddy Zimmerman. Her sister Shirley tells of how she used to tease Alice when she noticed her peeking out her bedroom window, trying to catch sight of Buddy in the yard. Alice and Buddy were happily married for over 40 years until his passing.
In 1957, Dana was born. Following in the next few years were Diane, Ken and Dona. Alice also became a devoted Godmother to her best friend Betty’s oldest son, Steve. Alice loved spending time with her family and was a regular spectator at their various athletic events and school activities. She and Buddy would pack up the kids for trips to Fenwick Island, DE, and to the Green Ridge Mountains. Alice loved entertaining family and hosted many parties and picnics, where she was well known for her potato salad! When the kids were in school, Alice would often help out in the school cafeteria. She was a doting “grammy” to her two grandsons Matt and Zach and loved to brag about them to anyone who would listen!
Alice enjoyed fishing with Buddy, walking along the beach looking for shells, going to the casino at Delaware Park on occasion and watching NASCAR. She loved #3, the Intimidator! She also looked forward to volunteering at the Jaycees Haunted House and playing softball with her sisters Linda and Shirley. She loved animals and always seemed to be nursing some little wild animal that the kids had found back to health, or taking in stray dogs which would eventually become part of the family.
Alice was a member of Emmarts United Methodist Church and loved spending time there, baking for the homeless shelter, participating in the SHARE program and delivering gifts to needy family.
Alice Zimmerman was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.
She will be missed by many.
