Alvin S. Manger, a cherished family man, successful businessman, and devoted man of faith, went home to be with the Lord on September 1, 2024, surrounded by his family. Alvin Manger was born in Baltimore in 1935 to Vernon and Virginia Manger (nee. Sherman). He grew up spoiled by his grandparents, living at the site of the family business in Southwest Baltimore, until the age of five. His younger brother, Paul, arrived when Alvin was nine, and the brothers attended Boys Latin High School. They grew up surrounded by family, learning the intricacies of the family business. Alvin’s passion for automobiles began early. At age 15, he was loading and driving tractor-trailers, a fascination that led him to own an estimated 80 or more cars throughout his life. With Carole, his wife of sixty-seven years, it was love at first sight. Their love story began when he picked her up while she was watching neighborhood boys play basketball. They soon married and built a family that brought them immense joy; Sharon, Jeff (Diane), Susan (Joesph), and David (Dawna). Married for an incredible sixty-seven years, Alvin and Carole would often be seen as the last couple on the floor during the anniversary dance at weddings. For a time, Alvin worked at Martin Marietta before returning full-time to his first love, Manger Packing Corporation. He progressed from working on the kill floor, to the cutting room, then into processing, where he honed his skills in blending spices and manufacturing meat and sausage. His innovative vision led the company to pursue federal inspection standards, and under his leadership, Manger Packing Corporation has continued to flourish into its sixth generation. Alvin’s love for his country and its history led him to take his family across the country to see the beauty it had to offer, creating many memorable experiences and adventures. He would often enjoy these travels with his nine grandchildren; Michael (Kim), Jason (Victoria), Jordan (Sarah), Samuel (LeAnn), Abigail (Benjamin), Matthew, Benjamin, Genevieve, and Jaiden. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Joshua (1995). He traveled across the country in a total of six different motorhomes over 49 years, starting with a 23-foot Kayot and ending in a 45-foot Prevost. A devoted member of Brooklyn Bible Chapel, Alvin’s faith was central to his life. He lived by the belief expressed in Romans 1:16: “The power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth,” and embraced the core message of 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 about Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection. A visitation will be held Friday, September 6, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Grace Bible Baptist Church, 1518 N. Rolling Road, Catonsville, Maryland, 21228. The funeral service will take place on Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 10:00 AM, also at Grace Bible Baptist Church. It was Alvin’s wish, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to St. Jude and Samaritan’s Purse.
