Betty, as she preferred to be called, was born March 10th 1941 to Constantinos G. “Tom” Karamplacas and Florence E. Karamplacas (nee Slunt)
Betty eloped and was married on July 29th,1961 to Edward John Hogarty (deceased), in Washington, North Carolina. Betty and Ed had 2 sons: Hilary Shawn and Ethan Andrew. After many years, they parted ways which led Betty on another part of her life’s journey to Florida.
On July 29th 1993, Betty moved to Florida, and eventually would take Russell Brooks (deceased) as her life partner. Russell and Betty had many adventures, but one with the biggest impact was Hurricane Charley. In 2004, Hurricane Charley destroyed their home, but together they persevered and rebuilt. Betty and Russell were inseparable until his death.
Due to Betty’s desire to live closer to family, along with a few health challenges, Betty moved back to Maryland landing at a senior community in Ellicott City where she spent many happy years.
Throughout Betty’s life, she found great joy in her several pets-both dogs and cats. The love Betty shared with these pets came through her many pictures, drawings and mementos she saved of those pets. Her most recent cat, Cleo, was 23 years old and they loved one another dearly. As a result of this great love, the family has decided that in lieu of flowers to please make a donation to Canine Humane Network, Inc. (CHN) in Highland, Howard County, MD. This non-profit dog rescue, shelter, adoption and training organization is operated by volunteer staff and big-hearted volunteer foster families. In 2019, CHN was named a top-rated non profit in MD.
Betty's family and friends are invited to a celebration of her life 9:30AM, Monday, June 2 at the Elkridge Furnace Inn in the Garden House, 5745 Furnace Ave, Elkridge, MD 21075. We look forward to spending this time together to celebrate Betty.
