Jani Qano of Ellicott City passed away peacefully on September 1st, 2021 at the age of 77 surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Qano is survived by his wife of 46 years Kleopatra Qano (nee Rroco), his daughters Doris Qano Shabanaj and Lili Qano Mundroff, younger siblings Kristaq and Anita, niece Pam, nephew Michael and four grandchildren - Thomas, Peter, Aldo and Lucy, whom he adored.
Born in Korce, Albania of Eleni and Gaqo Qano, Jani lived most of his life in Tirane, Albania. He attended Tirana University where he earned his Master’s Degree in Chemistry. He worked as a chemical engineer at the Tirana Cement Manufacturing Plant and as a researcher at the National Institute of Technological Studies. After the fall of a 5-decade communist dictatorship, he immigrated at the age of 48 to Bolzano, Italy with his family to give his daughters a chance at a brighter future. In Italy, he worked at the R&D department of Bayer Homeopathic Pharmaceuticals and had a chance to experience hiking some of the peaks and valleys of the South Tyrol Region.
In 1996, once again, he took the long journey and emigrated to the United States, settling in Baltimore. He worked as a chemist at Strasburger and Siegel, a food testing laboratory, until his retirement. This transatlantic journey, undertaken by his parents and grandparents in the early 1900’s came full circle as he became a U.S. Citizen in 2002 in fulfillment of the American dream. Seeing his daughters successfully complete post-graduate programs, marry, have children and settle nearby, filled his heart.
Mr. Qano cherished family gatherings, meals with friends, Ocean City summers, soccer and card games, daily walks and swimming and travelling. His long-lasting childhood and university friends were always a big part of his life. His chemistry background found a perfect match to his wife Kleo physics background. Together, they would never hesitate a dance, a walk, a laugh and a glass of wine. He leaves behind a strong legacy of kindness, loyalty and honesty. He will be dearly missed from his family and anyone who knew him.
Per CDC guidelines, the family is requesting any guests to wear masks for the visitation, funeral, and graveside services.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Bishop Cummins Reformed Episcopal Church, 2001 Frederick Road, Catonsville, MD 21228; with a funeral service following at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow in St. John's Cemetery, Ellicott City, MD.
