“I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing”. 2 Timothy 4:7-8.
On December 25, 1948 in Pineville, Louisiana, God blessed Elizabeth Washington Davis and Saul William Davis Sr with a daughter, Alice Marie Davis, after four sons. She was greatly loved by all and was affectionately known as “Lee Lee” by her family and friends. Alice accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at True Vine Baptist Church.
Alice received her early education in Rapides Parish attending Peabody Elementary School, Jones Street Jr. High School and graduating from Peabody High School. Alice was an astute student and excelled in her studies. She oftentimes would assist others with their homework. While playing with the neighborhood children, they would play school and she would always be the teacher. She would say she was born to teach. In Jr High and High School, Alice often participated in oratory and academic competition and most times placed first. She was a track star and traveled throughout Louisiana to compete which resulted in top placement for her school.
Alice graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with a degree in Elementary Education. She received a Master’s Degree from Colorado State University in that same major.
Alice married Andrew Timothy Johnson and to that union two children were born: Steven Gerard Johnson and Andrea Elizabeth Johnson. Alice relocated to Port Arthur, Texas and taught in the Port Arthur Independent School District for three years. The family relocated to Aurora, Colorado where she taught and coached track for thirty-four years before she retired.
Alice united with St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church under the pastorship of Fred Hopson and later under Randolph C. West Jr after Rev. Hopson retired. She truly loved working in the church and serving the Lord. She was a Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member and Leadership School Instructor. She also would teach at the National Baptist Conventions and other programs when needed.
She actively participated in and facilitated workshops throughout her lifetime and remained active in other auxiliaries as well.
Alice had a wanderlust for travel and often would take cruises at least three to four times a year. She would frequent her home in Louisiana to visit with family and friends just to keep in touch. She was not reluctant to fly to other states to be with family and to take a trip. Alice had a love for fashion from head to toe and her closets certainly displayed that!
Alice departed her earthly life to live her heavenly life on March16, 2025 at Denver Hospice in Denver, Colorado. She leaves to cherish her memory and her influential guidance and teaching, two children, Steven Gerard Johnson (Cherie) and Andrea Elizabeth Johnson Jeffries (Raymond); four grandchildren, Elijah Higgs, Daijah Marie Morris, Tamarick Gerard Johnson, DeAndra Alise Brewer Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Tehani Faye Marie Shropshire, Tehlani Marie Elizabeth Shropshire, and Teyana Marie Yvette Shropshire. Two siblings, Paul C. Davis Sr. (Maggie) of Alexandria, Louisiana and Gloria Jean Davis-Harris of Aurora, Colorado. She also leaves numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly and many friends from childhood through her adult years.
Alice never met a stranger...and our Lord and Savior was certainly not a stranger to her!
