

Barbara Lorraine Arko, 86, of Lone Tree, Colorado, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 23, 2025. Born on September 28, 1938, in Denver, Colorado, she was the cherished daughter of Julius Carl Hessel and Flora Mae Hessel, both of whom preceded her in death. Barbara was also preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, John Glen Arko, as well as her daughter, Brenda Lynn Arko, and her granddaughter, April Tanner Wheeler.
Barbara is survived by her brothers, William and Robert Hessel; her sister, Bonnie Wax; her daughters, Ardell Marie Arko-Sparhawk of Parker, CO, and Renee Maureen Arko of Lone Tree, CO; her grandchildren, Michael Paul DeBonis III of Two Harbors, MN, Caitlin Marie DeBonis of Denver, CO, Erika Arko Hansen, and Alexandra Arko Hansen, both of Lone Tree, CO; and her great-grandchildren, Nadia Wheeler of Littleton, CO, Izan Wheeler of Salida, CO, and Avery Michelle DeBonis, Karsyn Marie DeBonis, and Michael Paul DeBonis IV, all of Two Harbors, MN, in addition to numerous other treasured family members and friends.
After a debilitating five-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Barbara left behind a lasting legacy of unwavering love and devotion. A passionate mother, sister, and grandmother, she dedicated her life to sharing the beauty of the arts with all those around her. As a revered piano teacher in Littleton, CO, Barbara enriched the lives of students ranging in age from 3 to 70, inspiring them with her boundless enthusiasm and commitment to music.
Barbara’s interests extended beyond music and theater. She was an avid skier, runner, and backpacker who found joy in the serenity of the mountains, especially when surrounded by her family. She was also a seasoned traveler with a deep appreciation for culture and exploration.
Barbara's impact on her community was immeasurable. She was celebrated for her role in organizing exceptional fundraising efforts and special events for the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, the Central City Opera House Association, and the Food Bank of the Rockies. Her tireless work and passion for these causes led to remarkable fundraising successes, leaving a profound mark on the state of Colorado. The organizations she supported continue to thrive, a testament to her visionary efforts and philanthropic spirit.
Barbara’s vibrant energy, generosity, and relentless dedication to making the world a better place will forever be remembered. Her legacy endures through the lives she touched and the causes she championed
