Barbara Lorene Engel passed away peacefully at her Denver home on Thursday June 27, 2024, after battling a prolonged illness. She was born on November 1, 1936, also in Denver, and was raised by her Mother Lorene Iona (Wilcoxen) Rockwell and Father Albert Lyle “Rocky” Rockwell in Englewood, Colorado. She had one brother, Denny L. Rockwell, and one sister, Lynn Lord.
Barbara and her husband, Raymond W. Engel, met at Flood Middle School, attended Englewood High School together, and eventually married in Englewood in 1957. Together they raised four sons: Dan, Tim, Ed (Patti), and Terry (Jackie). They had 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. Nothing was more important to her than her family and extended family. After retiring, and before becoming ill, she spent most of her time attending events and activities of her grandchildren.
Beyond her endless effort of being a wife and mother, she was quite the artisan. She could draw, paint, sew and quilt, and many others. She worked in several different arts and crafts stores as the family moved for Ray’s employment, and she used her employee discount and her talent to decorate their home – most often in a Southwest / Native American motif. Over time she developed essential tremor, and her artistic creative talent gave way to a more artistic decorative talent – but her love of Native American decor remained.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday July 27, 2024, at 11:00 AM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel on 910 West Ridge Road, Littleton, Colorado 80120. A luncheon will immediately follow at the Church for extended family members. At 2:30 PM, interment will be at the Olinger Chapel Hill Cemetery on 6601 South Colorado Blvd. in Centennial, Colorado.
