Dr. Gary Cabot Martin died on July 4th, 2015 from complications related to his chronic neurologic illness. He grew up in Sherman Oaks, CA alongside his younger brother Rob Martin. He attended the University of California at Berkeley and following his premedical studies attended medical school at the University of Southern California School of Medicine. During his time there he met the love of his life, Joyce Marie Jones, who was then obtaining her Masters in Special Education.
Following med school and intern year, they moved to Denver, CO for Gary’s psychiatry residency. They were married in June of 1967. Gary continued his studies in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Medical Center and served as a Chief Resident at the nearby VA Hospital. He received fellowships to both the American Psychiatric Association and the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry. Following graduation, he was accepted into training at the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis within the University Hospital Department of Psychiatry. Simultaneously, he was an Officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, assigned to the Federal Youth Center of the Federal Bureau of Prisons where he cared for and treated imprisoned adolescents suffering from mental illness.
Gary went into private practice after his two years in the Public Health Service and later returned to the Denver Institute to complete training in Child & Adolescent Psychoanalysis. He was chosen to be an Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and later elected by his colleagues to serve as the President of the Denver Psychoanalytic Society and later as the President of the Colorado Psychiatric Society. He was also nominated to the position of Training and Supervising Analyst for the Denver Psychoanalytic Institute, helping to train and supervise aspiring psychoanalysts. He was viewed by his colleagues as a gifted clinician who often presented scientific papers on a variety of clinical topics at local and national scientific meetings.
Away from medicine, Gary was a loving and dedicated husband to Joyce and father to their two beautiful children Brooke and Blake. He was an avid skier, scuba diver, tennis player, handyman, adventurer, author, and philosopher. Some of his family’s fondest remembrances of him include him backpacking with his wife and his brother’s family in Colorado, taking the family skiing on every type of terrain in Colorado, sailing and windsurfing on the Cherry Creek reservoir, scuba diving with Joyce in Hawaii and the Caribbean, designing and building houses, and sitting on the patio discussing life, the universe, and everything.
Gary is survived by his wife of 48 years Joyce, daughter Brooke (Jilber) Ferri, son Blake (Leslie) Martin, grandson Django Ferri, brother Rob (Janet) Martin, sister Marsha Reichenbach, and all of you, his beloved friends and family. Gary was an incredible husband, physician and father. He was funny, irreverent, intelligent, and dedicated to helping others. He helped so many people find happiness and peace. The world is a better place as a result of him, and he will be missed greatly by all those who knew him.
