Helen was born in Decatur, Illinois on June 9, 1944 to Ezell Hinkle and Minnie Lee Hempstead Hinkle. Ezell died before Helen was born. Minnie later remarried to A. D. McFarland and the family moved to Denver, Colorado in 1959.
Helen matriculated in the Denver Public Schools, graduating from Manual High in 1962. She was an avid reader and she loved shorthand, typing, gymnastics, bridge, bowling, and football (especially the Denver Broncos). Her parents paid for her to attend a business school to hone her skills while she was still in junior high school. And Helen was an Owl’s Club debutante. Helen continued her formal education at the University of Colorado at Denver.
Helen had a wry sense of humor. She was very protective of her siblings.
In the Fall of 1966, Helen was introduced to and fell in love with a young lieutenant on TDY at Lowry Air Force Base. His name was Lawrence Jamalian Green. They married in the base chapel on April 22, 1967. Lawrence’s next active duty assignment took them to Aviano Air Base in Italy. And while on that assignment, Helen and Lawrence welcomed their only child into this world; they named her Patricia Ann Green. Patricia was born in 1969.
Before their marriage, Helen worked for Western Electric, a former AT&T manufacturing subsidiary. After Lawrence’s military service was complete in 1970, the family returned to Denver. They built a home in what is now Centennial. After Patricia was enrolled in the Littleton Public Schools, Helen began a career in Banking. She worked for Wells Fargo and its predecessors and at her retirement in 2006, she was a supervisor in lockbox services.
Helen was a faithful and loving mother, wife, sister and aunt. She was married for 58 years to Lawrence. Helen was further predeceased by Minnie Lee McFarland; A.D. McFarland; Nina (Marvin), sister; and Kayleen (Harry), sister. She is survived by Patricia; Lawrence; Cornell, brother; Roxie Lee (Reese), sister; Carl (Nina), brother; and Virgil, brother; and numerous nephews, nieces, and other relatives.
Helen is dearly and sorely missed.
