Herman Ray Barlow, or “Ray” as he was known, was born October 8th, 1933, in rural Gainesboro, Tennessee and later moved to the town of Cookeville during his teen years where he met his beautiful wife to be--Irene. On December 22, 1951, they were married at Bethel Nazarene church in Nashville at the age of 18. Early into their marriage, Ray was drafted into the Army. After two years of active duty as a mechanic in the motor pool, he returned to civilian life. Ray followed his dream to move west and chose Denver, as other family members had made the same journey before him. When he arrived, Ray joined the U.S. Postal Service and was a mail carrier for 43 years, enjoying his work in the outdoors of Colorado. He liked delivering the mail and took care of the people on his route like they were family. Ray loved country music, gospel quartets, and always liked to make people laugh with a good joke. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed camping, and traveling with his family in their motorhome. He was a man of faith and a long time member of Denver First Church of the Nazarene. Ray was happy doing most anything as long as he had his family around him. He always put family first and cherished his time with them most of all. Ray passed away at his home in Englewood, Colorado on Friday, August 31, 2018, at the age of 84.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Myrtle (Hawkins) and Herman Barlow. Ray is survived by his wife of 66 years, Irene (Hurt) Barlow of Englewood, CO; son, Dennis (Lewessa) Barlow of Madison Heights, VA; daughters, Pam (Jeff) Holler of Denver, CO and Amy (Jon) Slack of Littleton, CO; grandchildren, Devin Slack and Connor Slack, both of Littleton, CO; and other loving family and friends.
