Jon attended St. Mary’s Academy elementary and middle school. His most influential teacher was Ms. Anne Bayliss. JB, ever the experimenter, wanted to try a public school to see what it was like; so, he attended, thoroughly enjoyed and thrived in 8th grade at Powell Middle School. His science teacher was his favorite. Jon, at age 6, began playing AYL youth league football as a starting linebacker on a Titan 8-year old team, coached by Coach Joe May—the AYL-metro Superbowl runner-up championship team.
Coach May will be inducted in January into the Colorado Coaches Hall of Fame. Coach Joe May was a significant influence and beloved lifelong friend of Jon’s. Jon was a starting linebacker and backup quarterback at age 7 on a Titan 8- year-old team; quarterbacked by his brother, Joseph Barnthouse; coached by Coach Joe May – again, the AYL metro Super Bowl champions. Jon was the starting quarterback and linebacker on a Titan team of 8-year-old players, coached by Coach Joe May – the AYL-metro Super Bowl champions. Jon was the starting quarterback and linebacker on a Warrior team of 9-year-old players, coached by his father – the AYL metro-area Super Bowl championship team.
He was a flawless starting linebacker and starting quarterback. At quarterback, he never fumbled the ball. His coaches could bank on him not making any mistakes. His lateral quickness at linebacker was unrivaled. A thoroughly frustrated opposing football coach, whose offense could not advance the ball, in utter amazement exclaimed: “We can’t move the ball, because Barnthouse has a nose for the ball”. Jon played basketball on the Big Orange and Red Shield – top ranked Denver metro youth teams. Jon played on South Suburban youth ice hockey and wrestling teams; on Titan AYL baseball teams; and, was a standout youth lacrosse player. He had a strong passion for BMX youth bike racing. He regretted that his busy childhood schedule did not allow more opportunities to BMX race. Burleigh loved martial arts from an early age. He studied Tae Kwon Do under the tutelage of Master Lee, who liked Jon, saw his potential and took JB under his wing. JB’s passion continued, leading him to becoming an accomplished martial artist. He never started a fight. He would defend someone being victimized. He thrived as a freshman at Regis Jesuit High School, at that time an exclusively male student body, where he made instant friends and thrived as a scholar-athlete and stand-out freshman linebacker. Jon’s brother Joseph, also a highly sought out student-athlete, transferred from the all-male Mullen Christian Brothers High School to Arapahoe High School – a large Student Body, coed school. Jonathan was never going to allow Joe to have all the fun, without him; so, Jon immediately seized the opportunity to transfer to Arapahoe HS, as a sophomore, so he too could enjoy being in classes with female-coeds at Arapahoe HS. Their plan worked out. During his high school years, Jon enjoyed Arapahoe High School, were he thrived, was successful, and dated nice, lovely ladies. He was a Varsity linebacker for Arapahoe High School, Junior year. Arapahoe played in the Colorado State High School 6A championship game. He was the starting Varsity linebacker in his Senior year. Jon was awarded State Conference honors. His Varsity football coach noted, “Jon, pound for pound, is the strongest, toughest player on Varsity. He is exceptionally perceptive –he sees the whole field of play”. JB was the recipient of the Coach John Kline Memorial Scholar-Athlete Scholarship Award, at Arapahoe High School, Jon was a starting Varsity lacrosse player and Co-Captain, for Arapahoe High School -- Junior and Senior years. A top ranked player in Colorado. After completing high school, Jon went on to graduate from Boston University with a Bachelor of Science degree, with a Major in film, television, and communications; and, a Minor in anthropology. He enjoyed Boston and the University and his studies abroad in Australia, his Junior year; and, his travel to Europe during college. He was always attracted to Australia. JB enjoyed his Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity brothers – they were all good guys. Jon cherished his special bond with Allen Teo; they shared eclectic interests: Allen was highly accomplished in martial arts. Allen, was always exceptionally polite, respectful, appropriate, interesting. Jon and Allen stayed in touch for the remainder of Jon’s life. Jon always had excellent taste in friends, ladies, and every aspect of life. Jonathan ultimately earned a Masters in Fine Arts degree- in Movie Production and Design from the renowned film graduate school, AFI - American Film Institute, in Los Angeles, where he enjoyed talented classmates and friends. From an early age and throughout his entire life, Jon enjoyed movies. He loved to study motion picture film production. He retained an impressive memory of movie plots, scenes, characters, and lines. At an early age, JB became an avid, accomplished fly fisherman, snow skier, and motorcycle rider – all of which he enjoyed immensely.
JB was strong, graceful snow skier. His skiing form and ability put a smile on those who knew him.
A natural shooter in the field; however, he detested shooting game birds. In life, Jon always evolved: he gave up hunting, because he could not stand seeing defenseless birds being slaughtered.
He also enjoyed traveling, bike riding, hiking, scuba diving, water skiing, target practice, street motorcycles, dirt motorcycles, reading, metaphysics, and conceptualizations somewhat related to quantum physics. Throughout his life he enjoyed camping with his brother. He simply enjoyed hanging out with his brothers, Joseph and James. He was proud of his brothers’ accomplishments.

Biography
Jonathan (aka Jon; Burleigh; JB) was an exceptionally handsome, blonde-haired youngster and teenager; and a handsome adult. Seeing him would put a smile on your face every time. His penetrating blue eyes were knowing, a window to a highly perceptive soul. Jon, most of all, deeply loved and believed in his brothers, Joseph and James, more than anyone or anything in the world. He was proud of his brothers, Joseph and James, proud of who they are as human beings. He understood Joe’s and James’s intellect, creativity, and sense of humor. He enjoyed being with them, immensely. Watching Jon with his brothers Joe and James was an absolute delight. He always had his brother's backs and they had his. Jon feared nothing. Friends who knew him, also realized he would loyally stand by them. If one had to go into battle or competition, having Jon on your side provided a confidence of guaranteed dependability and most likely success. JB’s friends and teammates were able to trust his perception, knowing he would see the whole field. Jonathan had a highly sophisticated, amazing awareness of his surroundings. He sought out interesting people, who he respected. He was kind to a wide variety of people. Jonathan was loving: He relished being hugged by his family and friends. Jon was widely viewed as a loyal, adventuresome leader and trusted friend. Friends sought him out because he knew how to have a fun. His shared adventures made people happy, caused them to have a memorable time. Burleigh was exciting to be around and that’s putting it mildly! He could out Gonzo Hunter S. Thompson. He was the embodiment of Yin-Yang: On one hand he was strong, quick, perceptive, and an extremely gifted athlete. On the other hand, he was loving and exceptionally sensitive--in the best sense. As well as, a highly creative, energetic, competent, experimental artist and film media producer. From infancy throughout his life, Burleigh had a curious mind. He loved his mother, Teresa, reading to him. If his mother was reading to his younger brother James, Jon would appear instantly to share the enjoyment of the story. His mother taught Jonathan how to swim at an early age. His mother took him to select a shelter cat, who JB named “Nel”. Nel was a wonderful Yin-Yang cat. On one hand, an Alpha Battle Cat, while on the other hand a gentle, wise cat, who loved to be pet. Jonathan and his mother jointly handled veterinarian issues with Jocko, the Scottish terrier. Jonathan was a happy, rewarding infant. Jon loved his mother and she deserved it. Jonathan totally respected his step mother, Linda. He realized Linda was an exceptionally great step mother. He was always happy and proud to introduce his friends to Linda. Jonathan and Linda had a special relationship. They talked and shared ideas frequently throughout Jonathan's life. Linda listened to Jonathan's ideas; Jonathan appreciated Linda listening to him. JB would be in ecstasy, on his belly, splashing his arm and legs, in the bathtub - smiling from ear to ear. Burleigh was sincere, genuine, authentic, generous, and a loyal friend. Burleigh was widely viewed as a “unique person”. Jon was an artistic, intellectual, athletic, and social Tour de Force! When he entered a room or venue, the dynamics were notably altered—his energy was palpable. Jonathan Burleigh was an incredible gift from his Creator to all of us! He was highly perceptive and intelligent, an out-of-the-box thinker. His insights were priceless. As a child and adult, Burleigh was a Renaissance man, with a progressive mentality. His interests and explorations were endless. His varied interests fed his constantly evolving growth, intellectually and philosophically. JB was always aware of the cutting edge, out front of the norm, aware of future trends and inventions around the corner. He quickly recognized the next level, the next innovations. If he had two flaws, the first was impatience. Jonathan was gentle with all of our beloved animals. He would pet his dogs and cats for great periods of time. His attention to animals was not limited to short cursory pets. Dogs and cats would melt into ecstasy when Jon pet them. Our two Pudelpointer dogs, Burleigh (named after Jonathan) and Grace, adored Jon. Animals were attracted to him, as if he was a reincarnation of St. Francis of Assisi. He loved nature, he shared with his brothers and friends the thrill of catching and releasing creatures. Given his zeal and focus while chasing snakes, one would think he discovered gold. As a youngster on a Hawaiian trip, he discovered monster sized frogs. He believed he was in heaven. Watching JB’s unrivaled lateral quickness on a sports field was a wonder to behold. His uncanny, lightning, lateral quickness was part of the reason he was an exceptionally gifted football linebacker. His quickness was only surpassed by his awareness and perceptive abilities. He was blessed with a handsome stature, with broad shoulders. Whatever clothes he wore draped off of him gloriously. His body language, posture, and stature were svelte, powerful, and stately. Jon was popular and most accepting of people of different races and backgrounds. Early on and thereafter, he dated a wide variety of lovely ladies. He enjoyed Asian and Egyptian history. Burleigh’s taste in reading material and research was vastly broad. Jonathan and Joseph shared an affinity for the book, “Mustard Seed”, written by Bagwan Rashneesh. He lived in the moment in work and play. He constantly explored, creating media and artistic experiments. JB believed life was about exploration, experimenting and creativity. In his last year of life, he relished exploring trails on his electric E-dirt bike. JB’s other trait, which might be considered a flaw, was that he was a relentless squeaky wheel, when he wanted something to happen. That trait leads me to believe his creator is, presently being hounded mercilessly, to provide dirt trails in the After-Life, so Burleigh can enjoy. Electric-dirt bike riding. His verbal skills blossomed exceptionally at an early age. Throughout his life, Burleigh’s favorite target for deployment of his lightning-sharp verbal bombardments was his father. Undoubtedly, his Creator, is presently, having to deal with Burleigh’s verbal quickness. Leading me to opine, “We should all pray for the Creator”. From the day he was born and forever, Jonathan was a form of unique perfection. Jon was blessed with more exceptional gifts and talents than usual. Jonathan would encourage all to care about other people, in addition to family. Jonathan wanted all people treated kindly and with respect. Jonathan Burleigh’s “spirituality” and connection to the universe can be understood by remembering his unique “tour de force” personality manifested in his love, energy, creativity, sense of humor, intellectual and metaphysical explorations, and his never failing eternal love for his brothers. Jonathan Burleigh, forever, remains incredibly special to me. Our greatest wish is to be with Jonathan, his brother Joseph, and with all we love again.
