L. George Scheirman, 93 years old, husband of Betty Scheirman of 66 years, passed away on March 22, 2016. He was born in Tacoma Washington, to John George Scheirman and Mary Katherine Reiber on December 24, 1922, and graduated from Ft. Morgan High School, Ft. Morgan, Colorado. He served thirteen years in the US Navy, with deployments to the Pacific and Okinawa in support of World War II and the Korean War.
George was working at the Bureau of Reclamation in Denver where he met the love of his life, Betty. They were married February 29, 1948, at the Cameron Methodist Church in Denver. After living in Fort Morgan for three years where his brother and he opened one of the first drive-ins in Colorado, he moved to Denver and worked for the government. In 1957 they moved to Littleton where he was in management in the purchasing division for The Martin Co until he retired. They lived in the same home in Littleton until they moved to Wind Crest, a retirement community, in 2007.
George was known as the clown, Silent Sam, in the clowning outreach program at the Littleton United Methodist Church, where they were members for over 50 years. The clowns visited area nursing homes and shut-ins where they performed for the residents.
Coaching soccer was another interest for George and he served on the Board of Directors of the Littleton Soccer Association. He served as an assistant Scout Master for his sons’ Boy Scout Troop. Because of his commitment to his family and community, George was recognized in 1973 as Littleton’s Father of the Year.
George and Betty enjoyed traveling and visited many foreign countries including China, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Germany, Malaysia, Russia, Turkey, Thailand, Norway, Croatia and Hungary. River boat cruising was a favorite traveling mode for them, cruising the Danube, Rhine, Volga, Black Sea, and various ports of call along the way. They also enjoyed entertaining their family and friends in their backyard and at the mountain home they built near Bailey.
George is preceded in death by his wife Betty in 2014 and brothers Art, Conrad, and Rudy Scheirman and sister Hannah Reffel. He is survived by his four children; Jaclyn (Ken) Charney, Sandia Park; NM, Lawrence, Aurora, CO; Gary, (Valerie), Centennial, CO; and Craig (Elaine) Broomfield, CO, along with seven grandchildren, Daniel, Geol, Jonathan, Madison, Mat, Tina and Tracey; six great grandchildren and one sister, Irene Greenwald. There are also many nieces and nephews who loved and admired him very much.
George and Betty were among the first couples to move into Wind Crest, an independent living facility for seniors. At Wind Crest he was involved in the election committee for the RAC and organized the cribbage group. He will be thoroughly missed, as he always had a warm greeting and a pleasant and friendly smile.
Private interment will be held at Chapel Hills Cemetery. A memorial service celebrating George’s life will be held at 9:30 AM on Saturday, April 2, 2016, at the Littleton United Methodist Church, 5894 S. Datura St., Littleton. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. With George’s sense of humor and his love to laugh and his participation in the Littleton United Methodist Church’s Clown Ministry, in lieu of flowers, memorials in George’s honor may be made to the Littleton United Methodist Care program.
Celebration of life will be held 9:30am Saturday, April 2, 2016 at Littleton United Methodist Church, 5894 S. Datura St. Littleton, CO 80120.
