Marilyn was born on August 30, 1932, to Harriet and Cornelius (Casey) Knoll in Holland, Michigan. She is predeceased by her younger brother, Donald K Knoll. When Marilyn was young, her family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. She graduated from Ottawa High School and then attended Calvin College for two years, earning an associate degree in education. While at Calvin, she met Arthur Dykstra and they married on June 26, 1953, after Art’s service in the Korean War. After their wedding, they moved to Denver, near Art’s family.
Marilyn and Art eventually started a food distributing business together. Initially, Marilyn handled the bookkeeping at home and continued to do so until they sold the business in 1987. During this period, Marilyn frequently hosted events for both business and personal purposes. They traveled together extensively for both business and pleasure. Art passed away in 2010.
Marilyn and Art had four daughters: Pat, Nancy (Dale Venhuizen), Mary (Joel Gesink), and Jill (Don Montsma). They had 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Marilyn's family was very important to her and she was always willing to share stories.
Marilyn was very artistic. She made porcelain dolls for which she won several awards. She helped with school projects and liked to draw coloring pictures for her great-grandchildren. She loved decorating her home for all seasons.
Marilyn cherished her church. In her younger years, she actively served in various roles like nursery care, teaching Sunday school, and the girls' club. She also contributed to the kitchen committee and other church groups. She loved the Joy Guild Bible study, remaining a member until the end.
We are deeply thankful for the presence of Mom, Grandma D, in our lives for 92 years. She exemplified faith and devotion. Her unwavering love for her family was consistently apparent.
Our family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who has offered their thoughts, prayers, encouragement, and gifts in memory of Mom. Your kindness and support have been a great comfort to us.
