Nancy was born in Dallas, Texas on December 26, 1933 to John and Nancy (Summers) Campbell. She had one brother, Fred Campbell. Nancy grew up in Dallas, graduated from Sunset High School in 1951, and married her high school sweetheart, Augusta (Gus) Fox that year.
They moved to College Station, Texas where Gus was attending Texas A&M until Gus graduated in 1953. Nancy and Gus moved to Fort Devens, Massachusetts where Gus served in the army and Nancy was a secretary for an army General. They returned to Dallas where Nancy attended Southern Methodist University receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Music. Their two children were born in Dallas; Jenny in 1959 and John in 1962. The family moved to Huntsville, Texas where Gus served as a professor at Sam Houston State College for 6 years. Nancy taught piano from home and worked on her Master’s Degree in Education. In 1968 the family moved to Greeley, Colorado where Gus was a professor at the University of Northern Colorado. Nancy continued to teach piano, began a teaching career with Greeley Public Schools and obtained her Doctorate in Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1981. She continued to work for Greeley Public Schools as an administrator until Gus retired and they moved to the Denver area where Nancy became an administrator in the Aurora Public School District. She was also a professor at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, sharing her passion for literacy with aspiring teachers. Nancy is a lifetime member and a past president of the Colorado Chapter of the International Reading Association (CCIRA). In 2010, she received the IRA Mary Ann Manning Volunteer Service Award for her dedication. While serving with the CCIRA, Nancy started a grant program for parents focused on literacy. Recently, in January 2017, the CCIRA renamed that grant in her honor.
Nancy was a confident, ambitious woman with a passion for learning and education. She was also a kind and generous person and will be remembered for her positive attitude and her beautiful smile and bright eyes. She was a devoted mother to her two children and adored her grandchildren.
Gus and Nancy travelled to 122 countries, all 50 states, and all 7 continents. Nancy loved to plan these trips and document their memories afterward. She took her love for education along on these journeys and often scheduled visits to schools on their trips. Nancy loved to entertain and enjoyed keeping in touch with the many friends she and Gus made during their travels and their professional and personal lives.
Nancy and Gus lived in the Denver, Colorado area for 20 years, with the last 9 years as part of the Wind Crest community in Highlands Ranch. The last few years were very difficult for Nancy because she had Parkinson’s, which rapidly progressed, taking away her physical abilities. She stayed very alert and connected with her family and handled her situation with grace and patience. Gus was living separately in a memory care unit for the last few years, but they were still able to visit each other twice a week until he died in October, 2016, only a few months after they celebrated their 65th anniversary.
Nancy is survived by her daughter, Jenny Worth, who is currently living in Sharpsburg, Georgia with her husband Mike. Nancy’s grandson, Drew Worth, lives in Englewood, Colorado. Nancy’s son, John Fox, lives in San Diego, California with his wife, Mary, and their three children, Austin, Anna, and Aaron. Nancy’s brother, Fred, lives in Porta Vallarta, Mexico.
