Dr. Robert Eugene Zartman, known affectionately as Bob by his friends and loved ones, passed away peacefully on July 22nd, 2025, at the age of 89 in Lakewood, Colorado after a valiant battle with Dementia. Born on May 19, 1936, in Lititz, Pennsylvania, to Esther and Forry; Bob's journey through life was marked by his insatiable curiosity, profound intelligence, and unwavering devotion to his family and faith.
Bob's early years in Lititz, laid the foundation for a life of exploration and discovery. After completing his education at Penn State and Cal Tech, where he distinguished himself in the field of geology, Bob embarked on a remarkable career with the United States Geological Survey (USGS). His work was not confined to the laboratory; it took him around the globe. Bob was instrumental in establishing research labs and mentoring the next generation of scientists in Cape Town, South Africa; Mainz, Germany; China; and at prestigious institutions in the United States, including Harvard and MIT. His dedication to his field was matched only by his passion for sharing knowledge and fostering growth in others.
Bob's capacity for love and compassion found its truest expression in his family life. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 50 years, Ruth Ann, and a cherished father to his treasured children. Each of them benefited from Bob's wisdom, humor, and the life lessons he imparted, often during simple, everyday moments.
A man of deep Christian faith, Bob lived his beliefs through actions, showing kindness and integrity in every facet of his life. He was a pillar in his community, offering his time and skills wherever they were needed, and his gentle spirit and unwavering moral compass made him a role model for many.
Bob's interests were as diverse as his talents. A true outdoorsman, he found joy in rock hounding, mushroom hunting, caving, and sailing. His garden was a place of serenity and labor of love, where he cultivated not just plants but also the bonds of friendship and family. Bob's love for bird watching was more than a hobby; it was a testament to his appreciation for the intricate beauty of the natural world. Cooking and canning a bountiful harvest, he enjoyed creating meals he learned to prepare from his Pennsylvania Dutch roots and ties to farming and the grain crops made famous by the old Zartman Mill. Making his mother’s recipes connected past, to present, to future generations.
As we mourn the loss of Dr. Robert Eugene Zartman, we also celebrate a life extraordinarily well-lived. Bob's legacy is etched not only in the annals of scientific achievement but also in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
