Roger was born on March 5, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, the second child of Alice and Stanley Chilewski and brother to older sister Judith. Catholic School-educated through college, Roger received a bachelor’s degree in theology from Christian Brothers College. He later earned master’s degrees in both mathematics and operations research from Illinois Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in mathematics education from Northwestern University. His diverse career included 15 years of college teaching; 25 years with many of the AT&T companies; and five years teaching math at Denver’s South High School, his most-loved position.
Roger married Valerie Dalto in 1988 and welcomed daughter Allison in 1991. A very involved father, Roger helped Allison excel in math and supported her swim team activities. Two favorite memories are reading all seven Harry Potter books together before bedtime and Roger’s amusing antics as announcer for the Highlands Ranch summer swim team.
An avid bicyclist, Roger proudly logged 11,702 miles over the years riding solo and participating in many charity rides. His commitment to volunteerism also spanned many years. As an EMT, he served on first aid squads in New Jersey and Maryland. He was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister, first at Pax Christi Catholic Church and then at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church. A life-long learner he completed a four-year catechetical course at St. John Vianney Seminary in 2017 and continued to study online all the years that followed. Roger was also a volunteer at Littleton Hospital and Gilliam Youth Services Center. While Roger loved his many volunteer activities, without a doubt, the time he spent babysitting his beautiful granddaughters, Mary Jane and Harlow, brought him the greatest joy.
Roger is survived by his wife Valerie, daughter Allison, her partner Joshua Geesaman, beloved granddaughters Mary Jane and Harlow Geesaman, brother-in-law Peter Shuflit, niece Corine O’Hara, nephews Jeffrey, Keith and Marc Shuflit, and 11 great nieces and nephews. His loving sister, Judith Shuflit, pre-deceased him by just two days.
A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday. April 7, 2025 at 11:00 am at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Littleton. Interment will be at Olinger Chapel Hill Cemetery in Centennial following the Mass.
Donations in Roger’s memory may be made to Porter Hospice 5020 E Arapahoe Rd, Centennial, CO 80122.
