Dear Karen and Family
I am so sorry to hear about the passing of my college friend and Army buddy. I last talked to Ron about 12 years ago and tried last year to find him after you moved. I started my search for him again today Feb. 3, 2018 and found his Obituary. I feel saddened and stunned I didn't try harder.  You probably don't know me but Ron and I go back to the days at Santa Monica College were we first met. Our group of friends you might recognize was Wayne Kanagy, big Sam Samson, Bob Foster, Ron McNickels and I can go on. Ron had many friends and many circles of friends. I always will remember him as a careening, warm and very friendly person who always tried to please. Let me tell you one cute little story about Ron and I. 
At the time I met Ron he was driving a red MG sports car and then gave it up for a green Morgan sports car. Ron was working at an engineering firm while going to school at the same time.  We were at the age and time in our life where it was after the Korea War and before the Vietnam War. We both knew we were going to serve, but we wanted to choose our MOS rather than be drafted and not know. It was because of this that Ron approached me about going into the service as a volunteer rather than being drafted. We went into the Army under the buddy system joining a reserve unit in Gardenia. When we signed up, the unit guaranteed that we would get one of three MOS's that we listed on the induction form.  At this time Ron was taking courses at Santa Monica College to further his engineering career and I was taking courses in biology to start a microbiology career, but the unit didn't offer microbiology and did offer electronics. Ron listed his three MOS's as: telephone line repair, kitchen chef, radio repair and I listed my three as: radio repair, radio repair, and radio pair and of course I didn't know the first thing about electronics. Ron said, don't worry I will teach you everything you need to know, words that Ron regretted every day at Signal Corps, Fort Gordon George. Before we took our military and electronic examination Ron brought me basic and intermediate electronic books and set my study agenda. About every three or four days he would give me an examination correct mistakes and lecture on a new chapter. This routine went on for two months.

Since Ron did a great job teaching, and the test to determine our MOS was on basic electronics, we both scored high. After 10 weeks of basic training our company stood at formation and the master sergeant read off each soldier's MOS and next duty station. Now you know the army is great for making choices. So they send the electronic engineer to pole climbing school and the microbiologist who knows nothing about electronics to radio repair. Ron did not like climbing poles and to prove it every night he came back from pole climbing school with ripped fatigues and splinters in his backside and every morning in formation before leaving for school he saluted me with a BIRD.

If there is a GOD he works in mysteries ways. Today of all days Ron preoccupied my mind and I decided I was going to find him.   I only wished I could have found him last year. I give my love and sympathy for you and your family. I deeply pay my respects to your husband, father, college friend and Army buddy.
