He passed away on December 25, 2014 in Denver, Colorado at the age of 81.
Russell is survived by his children Kiersten Knapp of Highlands Ranch, Colorado and Rusti Cantrell of Rosamont, California.
The family is planning a private memorial and inurnment service at a later date.
