Winifred’s loving daughter, Helen Horblit, who cared for her so well in her last years, comforted Winifred in her last moments.
Winifred is survived by her children Helen and Brian, her wonderful grandchildren Benjamin and Harrison, and her loving daughter-in-law Agustin. She is predeceased by her mother Kate, father Reginald, her sister, and four brothers.
Winifred was born in Peterborough, England, and met her future husband, William, a US Air Force officer, during WWII. Winifred came to the U.S. aboard the Queen Mary, and lived with William in Texas, Kansas, Colorado, Ohio, and California. Her last years were spent back in Colorado with her children.
Winifred entered the British Postal Service in 1941 as a telephonist at the age of 16. In Denver, she worked at the Albany Hotel on the switchboards for some years. After her children were born, she was a homemaker and kept the books for her husband’s business. After his passing while they were living in California, Winifred went back to junior college to learn accounting and supported her children as an accounting clerk for Dole Foods. She did whatever it took to keep her family safe and comfortable, and she will always be remembered and honored for this.
Winifred loved to garden, especially roses and lavender. One of her favorite outings was to the Denver Botanic Garden. She also enjoyed going to the Brown Palace each year for her birthday to have high tea.
For Winifred’s whole life she was fiercely independent and fought to keep her dignity as she aged. She was very particular about her appearance and always dressed in immaculate outfits. Winifred was also very funny but was very articulate and polite to those that helped her. She was and always will be our lovely English mum.
Winifred was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and will be missed by all who were privileged to know her.
