After spending his younger years traveling the country and embracing life on the road, Brian eventually returned home, where his deep connection to nature became the foundation of how he lived and worked. He spent much of his adult life alongside his son, Jaden, finding joy in the simple pleasures of hiking, fishing, kayaking, and camping—often with their loyal dog Oscar by their side. Some of his favorite moments were spent relaxing by Cedar Lake or enjoying whatever seasonal sport was playing on ESPN.
A lifelong student of the natural world, he steadily expanded his knowledge in arboriculture, horticulture, and the many disciplines that bring landscapes to life. But for Brian, it was never just about the technical side—it was about the process, the creativity, and the quiet satisfaction of shaping outdoor spaces with care and intention.
Brian approached his work as an artist, drawn to balance, detail, and designs that felt timeless and organic. He was especially proud to fulfill his longtime dream of running a landscaping business called Brian By Design—a name he had imagined for years and finally brought to life.
Born on September 9, 1976, Brian is survived by his three sons, Jaden McDonnell of Ivoryton, CT, Kai Dowling of Branford, CT, and August Faulkner of Gainesville, GA; and by his beloved grandson, Liam Faulkner of Georgia. He also leaves behind his mother, Peggy McDonnell, with whom he shared a close and enduring bond. He was predeceased by his father, Michael Stephen McDonnell, in 2008, and his sister, Heather McDonnell, who passed in early 2022 after a courageous battle with throat cancer.
Brian’s life was grounded in grace, humility, and purpose. He will be remembered for his strength, creative eye, and the countless ways he gave of himself to others. His absence leaves a space that cannot be filled, but his influence lives on in the people and places he touched.
A Public Visitation will be held at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street, Centerbrook, CT 06409, on Thursday, June 12th, from 5 to 8 PM.
