Richard T. Schmitt, devoted husband, proud veteran, and cherished patriarch, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the family he loved so deeply. His life was marked by service, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to others—qualities that defined him in every chapter of his life.
Richard honorably served his country in the United States Coast Guard, an experience that shaped his discipline, sense of duty, and lifelong respect for service.
Following his military service, Richard began a long and successful career with A&P Supermarkets, where he rose through the ranks to become one of the youngest Store Managers. Known for his strong work ethic, steady leadership, and genuine care for his colleagues, he built friendships there that lasted a lifetime.
After his years with A&P, Richard transitioned into the insurance industry, joining Ter Bush & Powell. He quickly became recognized for his deep knowledge, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to his clients. His reputation grew throughout the Nassau and Suffolk Bar Associations, where his clients gave him high regard for his honesty, knowledge, and expertise. Richard ultimately retired as Vice President of Sales for Jardine Group Services, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and trust.
Richard was born to Louis F. Schmitt and Helen C. Schmitt, predeceased by his sister Margaret McGovern and brother Robert Schmitt and survived by his brother Raymond Schmitt.
For 61 years, Richard shared a loving marriage with his wife and partner, Kathleen Schmitt (née Broderick). Together they created a home filled with warmth, humor, and enduring family traditions.
He was the beloved father of Diane (Ronald), Michael (Michele), and Kristin (Dominick), each of whom carries forward his values of loyalty, humility, and quiet strength.
Richard was a proud grandfather to Teresa (Shannon), Kevin (Mia), Annemarie (Paul), Matthew (fiancée Grace), Stephen, and Kristina, and a delighted great-grandfather to Scarlett, Lilian, Theo, and Lucy. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought him immeasurable joy, and he took great pride in watching his family grow across generations.
Richard was affectionally known as “Uncle Dick” to his many nieces and nephews.
Those who knew Richard will remember his steady presence, his gentle humor, and the way he made every person feel respected and valued. He was a man who led by example—through hard work, kindness, and a deep love for his family. He was a devoted Catholic who served for many years as eucharistic minister and lectern at American Martyrs Church in Bayside and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Centereach.
Richard’s legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched, in the stories shared around family tables, and in the generations who will continue to carry his spirit forward.
May he rest in peace, reunited with those who went before him, and forever remembered by those who remain.
