Maude Amelia Powers Wascom was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on September 2, 1931, to Samuel Andrew Powers and Rebecca Jane Walters Powers. Maude was the sixth of thirteen children. A lifelong resident of Louisiana, she and her family have lived in Baton Rouge, Pineville, and Covington, but primarily in the EBR community of Central. She died peacefully in her son’s home on May 21, 2024, in St. George after living a life full of happiness and joy.
She became Mrs. Alfred Wascom in 1949 and was married for 70 years, raising a son and two daughters. She was a talented mother and wife, loved cooking for her family and others, enjoyed sewing, and maintained her home in spotless condition. Maude loved her family much and shared her love of God and Jesus with everyone she met, always ready to strike up a conversation with a stranger. Maude joyfully taught Sunday School at Zoar Baptist Church for many years and, although she never had a lesson, could play her favorite hymns on the piano. She also enjoyed camping and riding offroad motorcycles with her family, occasionally competing in endurance races through Louisiana forests (enduros).
Over the years, Maude worked several jobs to help fund the needs of a growing family. She has worked at a clothing store, as a chiropractic assistant, a daycare worker and spent many years as a dental assistant for Dr. Scott Browning at his Sullivan Road clinic in Central City.
Maude (“Granny”) is survived by her son Carroll Wascom and Kitty, daughter Rhonda Michalski and John, and daughter Diane Lea and Gil. Her grandchildren and spouses are Daniel Wascom and Marianne, Josh Lea and Mallorie, Mason Lea and Reighchel, Acy Fasullo and Christian, Joy Breaux and Brandon, and Stephen Wascom. Her great grandchildren are Paul and Hannah Fasullo; Luke and Samantha Wascom, Hayden, Mikah and Grant Lea. Her surviving sisters are Ruthie Monk and Sandra Cole. Her surviving brothers are Lonnie Powers and J.C. Powers.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred (Al) Wascom in 2019; her parents, Samuel Andrew Powers and Rebecca Jane Walters Powers; brothers, S. A. Powers and Kenneth Powers; sisters, Lena Mae Williams, Lillian Barret, Margaret Vick, Sophie Cash, Elma Ambrose, and Eva Pryor.
Pallbearers are Carroll Wascom, Gil Lea, John Michalski, Daniel Wascom, Stephen Wascom, Joshua Lea, and Mason Lea.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 29, 2024 from 10AM to 12PM; with a Funeral Service to follow at Zoar Baptist Church, 11848 Hooper Road, Baton Rouge, LA. Burial will follow at Zoar Baptist Church Cemetery.
