On September 17, 1957, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Alexander Louis Ruiz III entered the world as the third of four children of Gerald P. Ruiz Sr. and Camille Randazzo Ruiz. From the very beginning, Alex had a personality that was impossible to ignore. Bright, witty, and full of life, he had a natural way of drawing people in and turning even the simplest moments into something memorable and fun.
Alex passed away peacefully on March 6, 2026, surrounded by the love of family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Camille Randazzo Ruiz, and his sister, Petrina Ruiz Imbraguglio (George Sr.).
He is survived by his father, Gerald P. Ruiz Sr.; his brother, Gerald Ruiz Jr. (Mary); and his sister, Cristy Ruiz Ourso (Rodney).
Alex adored his family, and although he never had any children of his own, he was a devoted and beloved uncle to Gerald III (Shannon), Melanie (Ronnie), George Jr. (his godchild), Jessica (Jordan), and Katie (Cameron), and a proud great-uncle to Gerald IV, Peyton, Presley, Mianna, George III, Jackson, Madden, Ayla, Cade, Carter and Jaxson many of whom he helped care for on a daily basis, and all of whom brought him tremendous joy. His love for the children in his life was so great that over the years many people came to know him simply as “Uncle.”
He is also survived by many loving cousins and dear friends whose lives he touched throughout the years.
A lifelong resident of the St. Bernard Parish and New Orleans areas, Alex spent much of his career working in the hospitality industry in New Orleans, a profession perfectly suited to his vibrant personality. He loved meeting people from all walks of life, had a natural gift for making everyone feel welcome, and was never known to turn down a good time.
To know Alex was to know the life of the party. He was bright and funny, with a personality that could light up any room. He also loved to read, dance, and cook and had many “self-award-winning” dishes, turning ordinary gatherings into celebrations filled with laughter, music, and good food. He had an unforgettable witty charm, eclectic style, and a love for collecting odd and interesting things.
Alex was natural entertainer and incredibly talented on the piano from a very young age. When he sat down to play, the room seemed to change. Music flowed naturally from him, and those fortunate enough to hear him play will always remember the joy and energy he brought to it.
He also had a special love for animals, especially his beloved cat, Pierre, who brought him great companionship.
Alex will be remembered for his humor, his warmth, his music, and the countless memories he created with the people he loved. Though the world feels quieter without him, the laughter, stories, music, and joy he brought to others will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
He will be missed tremendously.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Alex’s memory to Lighthouse for the Blind.
The family is planning a Celebration of Life for Alex and will share details at a later date.
