Janice Ansardi Campagna, a lifelong New Orleanian and a pillar of special education in St. Bernard Parish and across Louisiana, was born in New Orleans on June 30, 1938. The daughter of Louis “Honey” Ansardi (born in New Orleans, Louisiana) and Florence Seide Ansardi (born in New Orleans, Louisiana). Janice is survived by her son, Dr. Jason Patrick Campagna, and Kelly Fabre (daughter-in-law); Josh Fabre (Grandson), married to Abby Fabre, and their son Oliver (Great Grandson); and Matthew Fabre (Grandson), engaged to Caroline Dipascal. Janice grew up with a deep sense of service, faith, and love of community that shaped her life’s work.
A proud graduate of St. Mary’s Dominican College in New Orleans, Janice earned her undergraduate degree before continuing on to the University of New Orleans, where she completed a Master’s in Education. Those academic roots, paired with her gift for seeing the potential in every child, became the foundation of a remarkable 47-year career serving the families of St. Bernard Parish. Before retiring, Janice led the district’s special education programs as the St. Bernard Parish Superintendent of Special Education, including 42 years as Supervisor of Special Education. Colleagues and families alike knew her as a tireless advocate who built services from the ground up, designing programs, mentoring educators, and insisting that every student be met with dignity, high expectations, and the supports to thrive. Many credit Janice with laying the very foundation of special education in St. Bernard Parish and helping to set the standard for Louisiana.
Her leadership was widely recognized. In 1998, Janice received the first-ever Louisiana School Psychological Association President’s Award, honoring her distinguished service and far-reaching contributions to the public interest. Those who worked with her called her a legend, the “Queen of SPED,” a mentor, and a friend. Titles she wore lightly but earned fully. Beyond her professional accomplishments, Janice’s greatness was most visible in the everyday acts of care she offered so naturally. She was a full-time caregiver to Joe and a loving mother to Jason, the roles that brought her the deepest joy and pride. Her home and heart were open to students, families, coworkers, and neighbors who needed a listener, a problem-solver, or simply someone who believed in them. Janice’s spirit will live on through the lives and families she touched. Her legacy is written in the classrooms she strengthened, the educators she mentored, and the generations of students whose possibilities expanded because she refused to accept less for them.
In honoring Janice Ansardi Campagna, we remember a life of steadfast purpose, gentle strength, and transformative love. A builder of systems and a beacon for all who believe that every child deserves the chance to flourish.
