Mary Etta Gassen Gras was granted her angel wings on Sunday, September 20, 2015 at the age of 62. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in some way throughout her very memorable life. Although Mary’s illness made her appear frail, she possessed strength, perseverance and an ability to overcome incredible odds and physical challenges. Witnessing her courage has led us to believe that each day is a blessing and an opportunity to create lasting memories. She was the cherished mother of James Irwin Gras, David George Smith and Grace Rose Devine (Erick). Daughter of the late Julian and Mildred Montifue Gassen. Sister of Deann “Dede” Parrett and Lalise “Butzie” Giarusso. Proud grandmother of Destiney, Ericka and Charley Devine. She is also survived and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Mary was a lifelong resident of St. Bernard Parish until Hurricane Katrina, where she finally settled in Pearl River, LA. She was a devout Catholic and loyal parishioner of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church. She was well loved, and affectionately known for her good nature and generous heart. She will be forever remembered as a loving and loyal mother, grandmother, sister and a friend of many, who praised her Lord and treasured her family. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering to be held at OUR LADY OF PROMPT SUCCOR CHURCH, 2320 Paris Rd., Chalmette, LA on Friday, October 2nd from 11:00AM – 12:00PM, followed by a Memorial Mass beginning at 12:00PM. She will be laid to rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
