Dorothy was born August 24, 1932 to Tommie T. and Zelma Prince Ross in Tyler, Texas. She was united in marriage to George C. Newman for 51 years. She attended Dillard University, earned BA and MFA degrees from Abilene Christian University, and a PhD in Child Development/Nursery Education from Texas Women's University. She was a certified counselor and life-long educator who taught at Cisco Junior College for several years.
She was preceded in death by both parents; husband, George; and a son, Gamar A. Newman.
Survivors include a son, George R. Newman of Abilene; a daughter, Kyra Newman Staples and husband, Bill, of Chandler, Arizona; grandchildren, Joshua and Alison Staples of Chandler, Arizona; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Thurs., May 31, 2012, in Texas State Veterans Cemetery, Abilene, Texas.
